We're an inner-city youth garden in Huntington, WV. We are currently building a 10'x30' run and converting a new 10'x8' playhouse into a chicken house. We have 6 Silkie Pullets and 1 Roo. Looking to add a pair of Sernams. with a project where most of the kids have never seen a live chicken, and adding this project is going to mean a lot to a lot of people. Any suggestions are welcomed! Brady

The breeds you picked are great for kids but, if you are hoping for eggs - not so much. Serama eggs are generally considered 1/3 the size of average eggs. Silkies are not reliable layers however, as a breed they are widely known for going broody often. When they do so ,you can swap their eggs out for fertile eggs from others breeds if you desire. Another good breed would be bantam cochins.
