scratch?

OK my girls are one year old and I'm going to start giving them scratch. should I put it in feeders or throw it out into the yard and let them scratch for it?

I would just throw a bit here and there. It's really just a treat to keep them busy.

My chicks are about 10-11 weeks. I started giving scratch a week ago but found BOSS (Black oil sunflower seed) was a much better alternative with higher protein, BOSS is 15-16%. Scartch is 9-10% I think? Both are still high in fat and should be givin as treats only. But the BOSS also makes their feathers nice and shiny.

They have been on layer feed since they were 18 weeks.

it is regular feed for my chickens. i feed them a Half&Half mix of layer and scratch

I throw a small hand full of scratch here and there as well for entertainment. Is every morning ok or to much for a treat?

I would only feed scratch after the morning meal, which should be substantial. Feed in the morning, Scratch and green feeds midday and Feed in the late afternoon.
