Got my 6 new chicks today! I have one that will NOT stop screaming. that distress chirp. so loud and will not stop. i am not sure what to do. they have water, she is eating, drinking, its 85 degrees, the rest are all crashed out sleeping soundly, except this one that WILL NOT STOP!!!!!!!!! what do I do?>>?>?

Pick it up. Cup it in the palms of your hand and maybe hold it closer to the light (not too close) and see how it reacts. Sometimes a chick will get chilled and it takes a little extra heat to warm it up. Also, I have found that mine will cry out sporadically, like they are calling for another chick or an unknown mother. Mine will usually settle down if I try this, or sometimes I heat up a wash cloth in the dryer for a few minutes and wrap them in that. If this chick is cold, he/she will love it.

Sounds like the chick is cold. Mine did that the first day and a half before I figured it out. I had to make the brooder a little warmer and then she was fine.

I agree, she may be cold! Try lowering the lamp a few inches or getting the temp to 90.

Hey Dee - I made the same sound when I realized yesterday's wonderful hot day was a distant memory in this morning's rain.

Once you get it warm and settled down, it should be fine.

should be 95 for 1st week and drop 5 degrees each week until 4 weeks....at 1 week you can drop to 90, 2 weeks 85 etc....
agree it is probably just cold....good luck

thats exactly what i did. I picked her up and cradeled her near the heat lamp and she quieted down. i put the lamp a little lower in the box and she crashed right out. She must be younger than the other 5. they are all a little bigger, not as wobbely as Booger. (his/her new name)

Last year we had a BR chick that did the same thing. Everything was adjusted just right and she would not stop screaming. So I went on BYC and was told to put a make up mirror or some other small mirror in a corner for her. She shut up right away. It was like magic. When the mirror would get knocked over she would start up again. Had it in the brooder for 5 weeks. Now she is still a loud mouth when she wants something. Crazy birds they are.
