We recently got 5 new pullets. During the day I keep them in a chicken coop close to the house. But because there's a hole in there that I have not yet secured (a weasel got in last winter), I bring them inside at night. I carry them out of the hen house in a cat carrier and keep them in my laundry room until morning. My laundry room also houses a rabbit, a hamster and two cats (it's big). This morning I had to fold some laundry earlier than usual and they were still there while I was doing it. All of a sudden - I heard a scream. Like this....."eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"!! But super high pitched and LOUD. Holy cow! I was scared out of my wits. I jumped and dropped all my laundry!! It was my silky named Fern. My children had said that she sounds like an eagle and they were right!! What on earth? I had no idea chickens could do that. Why would she and is this normal? I promptly took them outside to the coop to stretch their legs. I guess I need to get over being a mother hen and just leave them out at night - sigh.

wow I also raise silkies and keep mine in at night until I can get a better hen house built. I. have a pullet almost a year old two five month olds and a six month old. my silkies are very quiet unless I'm coming to feed then they talk a bit. even laying eggs my silkies are quiet. but one time my mom came over to see the chickens I left the room to get them some fresh water and I heard mine scream like that. it was the one and only time I've ever heard it. I came running to see what happened and my best guess was she got scared being in the room with my mom someone she didn't know. as soon as I came in the room it stopped. I teased my mom asking her what the heck did she do to my chicken
she said nothing I was just looking at her. I've never heard my girl make that sound again. I guess she was truly frightened by my mom being there with out me. so she screamed for me I'm assuming because she stopped when I came in. so its my guess that your silkie was frightened by something. maybe frightened by being there its really hard to say what exactly frightened her. maybe it was the cats? not sure but that's a sound they usually make when frightened. I have never heard that sound again since the incident with my mom. I hope this helps you out. if she continues to make the sound you can try covering her cage and see if that helps some. I wish you the very best of luck and hope this helps.
