Screws or Nails..

I don't know one screw from another. I saw a box of decking screws that were threaded halfway from the point then became smooth the other half to the head. I'm lost. Will these not stick out half way? Will the smooth end just follow through? Is this a good screw to use? I'm building from scrap mostly 3x2x8's and 3/4 inch boards of varying sizes. There will be other varying sized boards of varying thicknesses. Thoughts? Help?

The unthreaded part near the head makes the screw stronger and more like regular wood screws. The metal at the head is thinned when threaded all the way to the head. I have snapped the head off screws that were fully threaded.

Correcting my earlier post:
Use 1 1/4” screws when connecting 3/4” boards to each other.

Wow, thank you all for such good advices. With no carpentry knowledge I'm getting ready to make a patchwork quilt out of wood in a confined space.

Awesome!! Very informative post!! Personally, it would depend on the project or craft, and as to whether I want to just do a " throw together, patch up" or a more "sound" type.. I've used almost everything that I could get my hand on except the kitchen sink, well, maybe even the kitchen sink haha! Kidding, kinda.. It honestly depends on the project. Recently I bought one of those 3 nest wood nest boxes you have to put together yourself from atwoods and added some "craft glue gun glue" to it to make sure to add some extra support to it in one of my homeade smaller tractors. It works and my 4 layers in it don't have any problems with it, they seem to do well in it. Its just an experimental prototype tractor. Used screws nails and staples and craft hot glue gun glue, some 2x's and poultry netting. Worked fine. Just depends on the project.
