Chapter 4
I woke up. Looking around, I saw that it was brighter. I could see the coop! I looked down so I could see my landing point and... It wasn't there. The fox was gone. My stomach twinged. I hadn't killed it. It was still alive, and knew there was chickens here. I shivered, and began to slowly hop down, on the lookout for the fox. I shivvered, and saw that some orange fur was caught on the branch that had hit him on the head. I climbed down, and looked at the ground. Pawprints, moveing away from the branch, and dissapearing into the bushes. I shivered, and walked over to the coop. I called out to Samantha, and heard a loud "Quit your yelling, we were all asleep!" Charlotte. I watched as she stalked down the ramp, and looked a me feircly. "Go away, until the boy comes." I was afraid of her, so I went and hid in a small tree. I watched and waited. Soon, the boy came out, and opened the door to the coop.Angela, Gnarly, Charlotte, Bern, Gracie, Georgia, then Samantha. I raced over, and we embraced. I was crying a little, until I heard, "Break it up, you survived, and that's final. We don't really need you around." I looked up, and Charlotte was towering over me. "Why don't you just leave me alone?" I asked her. "Because," she said, shoving me over, "I don't need a 'hero chicken,' like you, who survived a night, taking over. " She walked away, but not before ripping out some more feathers. I rolled over, and walked over to the pond. Taking a drink, I realized the boy wasn't home. That gave me a little jolt. He wasn't here, so who would protect us from the fox???
