Working on a bed runner to sell to get started on that new fridge. I think this project will look awesome with the free form quilting. I'll have to do more of that; I really, really like it, no stencils to follow! The fridge will cost twice as much as the range, though, so one project won't do it.

Sweet Miranda got her first ever injection of penicillin today-her abdomen is hugely enlarged with fluid so of course, I suspect egg yolk peritonitis, but could be fluid from other things. She turned 5 years old last month along with Suede, Meg and Caroline, plus she is hatchery stock. She laid three eggs less than a month ago after a very long hiatus from laying for her molt, but she was on the nest twice today with no egg, which prompted an examination.

Also, Sunny, the last of my original hens, who is 6 yrs old, is breathing in a strained way. She is not congested, but her breathing seems labored. I don't know how much longer she'll be with me.

It's sad to watch them get old and ...... My originals are from Sept 2007, I have 3 JG's. One has labored breathing and some growth in her nostrils. Even Valerie, who never let herself get touched, has slowed down.

I thought you had chickens longer than 6 years. It goes by so fast.

Cynthia, Valerie laid some eggs the first year, then a handful the second year, and that was it. She hasn't laid in 2 years. But looks oh-so-healthy and shiny.

After my first 3 JG's, that winter I hatched Valerie, I still have 2 original silkies, and 3 original polish that lay very well. I think they have a boyfriend on the way, hopefully he'll get here next wednesday or so. I also have some prized eggs coming this week, but they are a secret. Then Chickenzoo is collecting some more Polish eggs for me, Either black tailed red, or Tolbunt, she thinks the tolbunt roo snuck in with them, LOL. So, I think I might be breeding some really cool Polish this year. Polish are very sweet, somewhat easy to catch, and the hens yell like peacocks. My husband even gets more and more attached to them.

Still my favorite (though I can not find where you found these)....
I found them! I do really really like these!

While I do like the ones on the cabinet I doubt DW would let me have them and I wonder how many chickens it would cost to redo the whole kitchen.

That is odd that Valerie laid so few eggs. Gypsy was a very good layer up until this year. She took half of last year off, has laid a few eggs this year so far and quit again.

Sadly, my hunch is that Miranda is suffering from heart failure/kidney failure. I don't believe this is egg related. I think her systems are shutting down. She even smells bad/off, which is highly unusual. She is filling with fluid at an alarming rate, seems "spacey", is turning dark in her face, didn't come out with the rest of the flock this morning, only wanted to stand around. Tom put her in a nest where she sort of listed over to the side. We took her into the hospital cage above Zane where I feel she will pass away soon with food, water, thick hay and a reptile bulb over her for warmth. I just think she has come to the end of her life and I so hate that. She's been very, very healthy and robust and this came on suddenly, without warning.

Poor, sweet, beautiful Miranda will be so missed around here. Just wasn't in her hatchery genetics to live a super long life, but I guess she did beat the odds by living past her 5th birthday.

And this is Caroline, her "sister", same age, who will miss her terribly, I'm sure. Caroline hasn't laid in ages, but her comb has become really red of late, so I'm holding my breath waiting for her to start up again.

Quote: Scott, I appreciate your input greatly! No need to worry about "meddling". Thankfully, Denny and I live on the opposite side of the state from where it rains all of the time. Humidity is relatively stable year round here at about 35% or so. Yes, it gets a lot drier in the summer months, most years. But, by and large, 35% is the norm. Those mountains [the Cascade Range] do a pretty darn good job of blocking most of that Pacific moisture, ya know!

We did the entire living room half of the great room in the natural hickory as well. I'm absolutely loving the way it looks and feels so far.

Tell Colby that I'm thinking of him and praying for him as well.

Please keep us posted on his progress.

Karen, stick by me sweetie, and you'll learn some very colorful terms. Though I'll warn ya, some may not be fit for polite company!

Cyn - sorry about your girls. I noticed one of the Del roos isn't roosting and I think it's Nick. I don't know how old he is. I'm setting more eggs next week. I may just pull George and see what happens.

The Dels girls aren't laying worth a darn. Can't figure out what is wrong. Perhaps I should buy some greens for them. Right now it's just been scratch and Dumor pellets. Perhaps it's the light being on. I just don't know.

The BR's should be laying but Lord have mercy I might get one egg a day. There are two SLW's hens in there so from 13 girls I'm getting one egg? Very dicouraging.

The weather here has been amazing. High's in the 40's. No or little snow. Rain today, but not much. If we have a hot summer this place will be as dry as I don't know what. I could do with some dry.

Cyn: so sorry to hear about Miranda. I remember her last march when I came up to get the Delly babies. She is a pretty girl.
Kathy: Those are some pretty Choc.

We are kind of worried around here in the past 6 months a Human had Rabies in Sumter county bitten by a bat. In Richland county a few people and there pets has been bit by a rabit fox in the last two weeks. fox still has not been found.

It's so sad when they are going to die. It does sound like either congestive heart failure or , I know when my one dog had kidney failure, she had a real terrible smell too.

Caroline is still a stunning hen! What pretty coloring!

Serrin! You're just too funny!
