I'm with Cyn on the white chickens. Swore I'd never have one. Then my white showgirl surprise hatched. So I have one white chicken....
But I will never have barred birds. Very firm on that.

Nella, what sale are you going to in 10 days? If you hear of anyone looking for some SQ millies, please let me know. Also, did Karen (kcsunshine) contact you about getting some cochins for someone she knows?

I was only into eggs when I first joined this site, and had a mixed flock.
Then I fell for d'Ucccles and decided they'd be my main breeding bird. The silkie/showgirls were just the hobby-within-a-hobby. Then I got $35 for a scruffy white showgirl love-child of Princess Sophie's

So I'm thinking my hobby's hobby will fund the actual hobby. How weird is that?

The madisonville sale again. Its 1st and 3rd saturday of every month. i missed all of the september dates......was in Vegas for the 1st weekend and too tired for the 3rd weekend. Supposedly the 1st saturday is busier than the 3rd anyways.....

Nobody has contacted me about wanting bantam cochins lately...........I have 2 large fowl silver laced pairs for sale, a gold laced bantam pair (hen is a big bantam and super fat). 2 mixed cockerels that don't have matching ladies but I will pair them up with probably a black or red girl. I have 2 extra gold laced boys that don't have ladies....again, will probably pair them up with some other colored girls.

I'm not selling any girls in anything other than pairs....as I really want to keep them all LOL. I am only selling them to get rid of the boys. I like the silver laced large fowl girls quite a bit but the boys are being obnoxious. May try taking them to the sale alone this weekend since large fowl boys do sell for meat there. They aren't bad boys but are at the hormonal teenage stage.

I like white chickens myself, even though they may be hawk magnets. honestly, I have not yet lost any white birds to predators. Lost a black/gold, a black/silver, a blue mille (so mostly brownish), a birchen and that little blue barred chick. I have a splash andalusian pullet, 2 white leghorn hens and 5 white leghorn/giant crosses that are white with black specks. All are fine and dandy. The white leghorns are FILTHY looking but they are dust bathing machines and badly overdue for a molt. Sigh.

I love my barred birds. Saw the most amazing barred cochin rooster recently. I want one. My blue cochin roosters are nothing impressive, especially the older guy. The younger guy is actually pretty darn nice.....great type and a nice deep color. But nothing compared to that barred cochin guy. Want.

And so I shall just keep trundling along with my little mutts, with no breeding program in mind, what so ever.

And I will love them and take care of them and we will be happy forever. Just me and my little mutts.

No stressing over body types, or color correctness. Nope. Just a bunch of little mutts, free ranging and being chickens, doing what chickens to best. Running around, eating insects, laying eggs, and talking up a storm. That's more than enough for me, and more than I ever dreamed they would be.

Although.......I sure would love to have a flock of Del's!

See? It's contagious, ain't it? This desire to have perfect and purebred birds! *sigh* Only time will tell...........

Ohhhh, you should feel the feathers on my Barred Rocks .... soft and smooth. I dunno, but they feel softer than other breeds. Very nice to pet on!

I have silkies/showgirls and d'Uccles, so I do not leack for soft fluffiness to pet.
I had an altercation with a 'Dominecker' the first time we raised chickens as a kid on the farm. She & her 2 sisters severely harrassed my mild-mannered New Hampshire Reds. Even the Games were nicer than those @$%#^ Domineckers! When I see a barred bird I can't appreciate it for the rage that just comes up in me at the sight of barred feathers. Unreasonable, I know, but I can't help it. So I leave them alone since I can't be nice.

When I read Cyn's line about Suedenator passing on I thought I'd missed something and about had a heart attack. Don't scare me like that!

Yard full o' rocks :

I guess we all have "just so much space" (and $$) and I got a little carried away here with no way to focus. I just had "chickens"....now I will have chickens and a plan to breed them and make the breed better

Isn't it funny how things evolve like that? At first we just wanted chickens for eggs. Now it seems to us that preservation is more important. Hmmm, never ever thought I would be into chickens!

I like mutts as well as purebreds - like mutt dogs, you sometimes get the best of all the parents and a little bit extra besides. But I do like the idea of preserving and improving -and I am SO happy with my Dels and Orps.
I like both kinds of Orps, and I plan on keeping both kinds. Ultrasuede is so good with his drama queen Orp girls. I think it took him a while to get used to them after having lived with Del girls, but now Katia snuggles with him, and he scolds her if she does something naughty to Silk or Satin, and she hides her head in his chest and makes excuses.

Kathy, what are you going to do with your Orps? Didn't I read somewhere that you want to get down to Dels, RIR and BR? OR did I dream that up so I could lay claim to all your Orps?

LOL, I had already forgotten about you wanting him. He is back in the rooster pen risking life and limb every night since I am being a bad chicken mom whose self preservation instincts have kicked in......and no longer truck up their slippery slope (ha) to lock their coop at night.

Interesting rooster pen story.....last night I was outside getting everyone "put away". I knocked the 3 kids off the garage rafters as always. They are such brats, if I am outside when it gets dark they will go straight to the coop like they should...if I go out after they are already up in the garage rafters, as soon as I get the rake near them they fly off and run straight to the coop. Jerks. They know better.

Anywho, sure seemd like everyone went to bed early. Wasn't even all the way dark and all the "big kids" were in the big coop. So I went ahead and closed the coop up and went up to the garage to finish collecting eggs and doing things. Next thing I know I hear the biggest ruckus coming from the rooster pen. Everyone is sounding off and screeching and doing calls and just FREAKING OUT. So yes. 9 roosters freaking out. Imagine the sound. I figure something must have gotten into their pen and coop so I go trucking down the hill to see what was going on. I round the turn and see a single bantam cochin hen on the outside of their pen....my mille cochin rooster just to her just on the opposite side of the fence (in the pen, she was out). He was freaking out adn all the other boys who were still in the rooster coop were freaking out.

All of that just because a hen got left out. I think she was panicky that she got locked out of the coop at sundown and as soon as she made a scared noise the roosters all went crazy. Maybe I need to upgrade some of those boys to the big yard after all. I was impressed that they were so worked up about it. Good boys.

To be honest, it sounded like something was in there killing them all. I thought maybe something had crawled out from under the garage (next to their pen) and was in there OR that one of my dogs had busted into it....they don't want to eat the chickens but they sure are fun to make run and flap sometimes.

On a sidenote, after all that drama and noise....neither of my dogs even came over to see what was what. I had to call them over afterwards. Stinkin dogs.
