Cyn, I hope the eggs will hatch

I have had a total of 11 chicks hatch since Wednesday. One I believe was eaten by Shug

I took the other pipped egg and put it under Barbara and she now has a Del baby. There are three NH chicks and then the 6 Olive eggers and Marans. I may try to candle again tonight but I am still fighting a bad headache..

Hope you're better this morning, Laura.

Candled the eggs under the D'Anver broodies, who are just on about Day 4--they are so easy to do early. Unexpected result.

Aimee had two of her own, one of Penny's and one of Shadow's. Her two are developing great. Shadow's has a floating aircell with bubbles around it and no veins. Penny's is obviously not fertile.

Carly had two of Shadow's. I left them in, but see no sign of fertility whatsoever. No idea what's up with that.

So, if Aimee's two eggs are the only ones growing, at most, the two broodies will have two chicks to raise between them. At least, most of Aimee's chicks seem to be pullets so easier to sell.

We gave Dusty 5 D'Anver eggs, plus one of Hope's and one of Meg's, just in case we get fertility on those. 3 iof the D'Anvers belong to Aimee, thank goodness. 2 are Penny's if I recall correctly-I don't think I put any of Shadow's in there. I don't give anyone Carly's anymore because they are so very tiny, sometimes resulting in issues with the chicks, plus she's a cockerel-producer.

Thanks Cyn, I do feel a bit better this morning. I felt too bad to candle eggs last night but hopefully tonight. No more new chicks this morning.

Glad you're feeling better. I hate those stupid headaches. Makes you feel "vague" for days afterward.

I think I know what happened with Shadow's eggs. Angus, bless his heart, wasn't feeling well for a couple of weeks, at least, before his death. Shadow was his hen. Aubrey spends most of his time guarding Molly, the Phoenix, and her little male chickster and Angus won't let him mate Shadow or one of the other hens, not sure which, probably Penny. So, Shadow's eggs are not fertile for that reason. Who fertilized Aimee's I'm not sure, but probably Aubrey. Now, I get it.

That makes sense, Cyn. Last year I kept getting nonfertile eggs from my Orp pen. I kept blaming it on the fluff, but it continued even after a fluff trim. I had two roosters in there. When I watched one day, I noticed that every time one would try to mate, the other one would knock him off. Once I removed one cockerel, I got fertile eggs.

Laura, I hope you are feeling better!

I candled the D'Anver eggs under Dusty, which are one day behind the ones Aimee and Carly are sitting on. ALL five are developing just fine.

Since the two D'Anver broodies were down to only the two of Aimee's fertile, and Carly was being left with nothing, I removed Penny's two from under Dusty and replaced Carly's infertile ones with those two. So, Carly has two of Penny's and Aimee has two of her own, just about 24 hours apart. Hopefully, that will work out okay.

Dusty is left with three of Aimee's, one of Hope's and one of Meg's, but of course, I can't candle those Orp eggs on Day 4 very well, so will have to wait a few days to see if they are fertile.
