Sdwd

I think I went half way thru last Sunday before I realized it was DST. All the clocks, Cable box, cell phone, computer, changed, so I never noticed.

I had given the man that owns the stable where I keep my horse, 2 roosters. He says he want hens. So I go home and look at the hatcheries. Well, aside from the poor dates leftover, and the minimum, I'd have to lay out $80..+ to order. He only wants 6 hens. So I did go in the fridge and pick out a dozen eggs to put in the bator tonight. My chicks will hatch way before I could get some ordered and sent. And the money! I got them for free!

Re: alfalfa. I will grab some at the barn for the hens. Sounds like a good idea.

Oh, I so gotta laugh! I was down at the feed store on Friday. We needed some egg cartons, as the girls are far out pacing the rate at which the neighbors are returning them.

Anyhow, AF had gotten their spring turkey poults in, and had them on display in the typical big bin on the floor. OMG! I have got to make room for some of these little charmers!
lol.png
I put my hand down into their bin and immediately about a half dozen or so came over to investigate. So, I made soft little reassuring sounds at them and another half dozen or so came over to my hand and cuddled up. I then made a sound that my chickens usually find quite calming. Let me tell y'all right here and now: Chickens do not speak Turkey, and Turkey DO NOT speak CHICKEN!!!

In Chickenese, that sound is a one of reassurance. In Turkeyese, that same sound is apparently an alarm call!

All of the little goobers who had been sprawled out under the brooder lights and taking life easy, were suddenly involved in a FBLP [Full Bore Linear Panic] and looking for something suitable to take refuge under. That turned out to be my hand!

I went from just a dozen or so friendly little babes hanging out by my hand to the entire bin of 50 or so all clambering to be inside of my skin in less than two seconds! OMG! If ya want cheap entertainment, just visit your local feed store and make a soft trilling purr noise at the poults. Let the hilarity commence!! LOL!

I guess you will make a great mom for those poults. Did you tuck them under your wing and take them home?

Believe me. I thought about it....for all of about zero point two eight seconds!

Especially the one who was clearly male. Less than a week old and that li'l guy was already dropping his wings out and strutting! He Da MAN!!!

I can just picture that !

I have a Polish roo in with 11 girls. He's not even fertilizing 50%. How do I add another roo in there?
Can you make 2 pens? 1 cockerel/cock bird in each pen with 5 girls in one, 6 in the other?

I find when I have more than about 6-7 hens in a pen that the cockbird has his "favorites" and therefore some of the eggs are never fertile

I agree with the other posts. If you want to add a new roo you may have to put the new roo and some girls in a different pen. The only success I have had with having two or more boys in one pen is if the pen is large enough so the subordinate boys can get away from the dominate boy and they grew up together. It has been also that time of the year when the boys aren't doing a good job. Fertility should pick up as the days get longer and warmer.
