I had intended to use the front half as a green house but it got so humid and hot I had to take the plastic off the front. Surprisingly this coop is about 5 degrees warmer than the wooden coop. BR rooster is the only one without frost bite. It's great in the winter but when the weather gets warm I have to cut the plastic half way up the sides. The plan was to put a run on the backside too and rotate usage.

So, do you think the frost bite is because the tarp keeps in all of the moisture?

I find the entire venting thing a pain.

It is very difficult for me to get everything right, I think my problem is that I get a fair amount of wind.

Hard to vent well without introducing a constant arctic blast.

No you misread, the one in the hoop coop is the only one WITHOUT frost bite. I think it might be ventilated okay. Also he sleeps on the floor on a bale of hay.

Ventilation is hard to get right. My wooden coop needs more.

Alaskan, [gee, I sure wish I knew your real name!] I can fully empathize with your snow and arctic air issues. We face very similar conditions in the winter time, here in the Inland Northwest. [about 30 miles west of Spokane WA and a good 700 feet higher in elevation] It's not uncommon for us to have three feet or more of the white stuff on the ground by the middle of December. It then sticks around until the middle of April or later. We've even had snow fall as late as the 10th of JUNE!!

Our set up would be wholly acceptable if it weren't for the five extra boys that I currently have. [and now you know why I no longer hatch my own eggs! It's just too easy for me to become attached to the boys!] But, I made a promise to those guys that I'd move heaven and earth if I had to, to give them full and complete lives. So, God and time willing, we'll build the big coop/green house either this summer or next spring. These boys are so sweet, they deserve to be "Da Man" of flocks of their own.

Later, as the boys come to the end of their natural lives, we'll switch over to pure herritage bred breeds. Del's will of course be in that picture. I also want BWA's, BR's and maybe some BLRW's! Ooooh! The possibilities will be ENDLESS!! Sometimes, I get giddy just thinking about them!

Rancher
What is the wire frame is that cattle barrier - or is it a greenhouse kit- The greenhouse is one end and chickens in the other??

This set up is four cattle panels from TSC. 50" X 16'. Half is coop and half is run during the winter months and days when I can't be home to let them range. I'm usually never gone more than half a day.

Here's another, half hoop. One panel, big enough for 5 - 6 large birds. All my birds are let out during the day usually. I don't have a finished pic, but it's covered with a large camo tarp. Back is covered with cardboard and feed bags. Front is covered with fleece for the winter.

Awesome - that might be the answer to my breeding pens- Put that on my never ending project list- Thanks for the post . Great idea.

Edit to ask what size is the starting platform for the one panel in this post. ?

Oh for pity's sake! I know I shouldn't complain about this, being as there are portions of our great nation that have had and are facing far worse weather conditions than me. But, it's May 22 and it's SNOWING!!!

Tim, I think I'm gonna take a page out of your book and build me some hoop house extensions off of the main coop and duplex coop. My babies can handle the rain just fine, but they still need someplace nice and dry to have their dust baths.

Fricken fickle weather. Just a little over a week ago, we were enjoying sunny mid 80's! I guess that was our summer! **sigh**

I do TRUELY feel for you!

But then again....since you actually see 80 it should at least melt fast.

Hang in there! You can always run out and beat it with a shovel. :D
