I've thought about using straw on a number of occasions, but it just looks messier than what I've got going with the pine shavings as it is. The neighbor down the road who also has chickens uses straw and her place is.....errrmm...uuuuhhh....In a word? EEEWWW!! Just EEEEWWW!!! Of course, that could be on account of how she keeps [or doesn't keep] her coop, if you know what I mean.
And then there's the issue of storing something that mice and other rodents love to get into. With the pine shavings, they come in a plastic bag that I can open and close as I need it. Once you break open a bale of straw, it's not long before it's
everywhere! And I don't always need an entire bale all at once. I must admit though, having said all of that, the price you're getting the straw for, Bassleg, is certainly appealing.
I remember when my dad kept pigeons many, many years ago. He had the distinct advantage of being the head guy of the carpenter shop at Tacoma Boat Building Co. He would bring home huge burlap bags of wood shavings all the time from work for his coop. It was all clean, dry shavings from all kiln dried wood. *sigh* What I wouldn't give to have access to something like that today.
Hmmmm....
Oh SNAP! I've got it! There's a commercial cabinet manufacturer right down in Spokane! I bet they have TONS of shavings! Oh boy! I know who I'll be giving a call to first thing in the morning!
If this works, the rest of y'all might want to check into any cabinet or furniture shops in your area too!
I'll let ya know if I make any positive progress on that score.
OK, kiddiwinks! It's WAAAY past my bedtime. I'm exhausted. Why in heaven's name am I even up this late? Must be another night without the sandman anywhere in sight. *sigh* Hope y'all have sweet dreams. I'll catch up to everyone in the morning. Scott, I'm still looking forward to seeing all the pics from your hunting trip. And Cetawin, the pictures of Joleta Bey are wonderful. Now please, tell Cheyenne to be sure to get some good pictures of you and Jo as you two join up! What's that old saying? "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a human"....or something to that effect.
