So I got this crazy idea and craving for mincemeat pie...do not ask. Anyway I made it and am taking it out of the oven when husband says "Baby look at this" I pull my head out of the oven and look to where he is pointing and see this:

Kathy, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll vaccinate my own if I get them from MPC, since they charge an extra dollar.

CYN!! Yay, how exciting! So much for "I shouldn't do the March hatch because of money".

UGH! My friend and I just did out "health check" on my girls, and everyone but PEPPER seems good. One of her scales has chipped off the bottom of her left leg, and no, she doesn't have scaly leg mites. We rinsed it with warm water and she now has 2 bandages around it- not too tight but still sturdy. She'll be staying in the injured pen until it heals, and I'm changing out the bandages every five hours. Anything I can disinfect it with?

Thanks.

Nick,
You are missing the point here. The chicks have to be vaccinated when they hatch. If you buy hatchery birds, you need to have THEM do it. At $1.00 it is worth it. To buy the vaccine yourself will be about $20. a bottle, plus buy the syringes, needles, etc....

Sorry. Oh well, maybe if I get my incubator...

And is that the same with the newcastle/infectious bronchitis vac?

Well, I won't be buying materials unless I have to for that coop, Nick. We built the Firetower with all recycled materials except for the roll roofing and paint, so hopefully, we can do that again. Certainly, we'd have to buy the hardware cloth, though. The real money factor comes in with feeding the resulting chicks month after month, then year after year. I've had a too-large flock before and don't want to go down that road again.

Hi everyone! Well sold the 7 other BO girls today. It was somewhat easier than yesterdays sale. THey went too a younger couple with young girls, so they have went to a great home! So now I'm down the ten that I wanted to be down. So this is the new arrangement here. I have Big Willy(BO roo) 4 BO girls, and 1 Buff Rock girl in the laying pen with Boone,Jack,Jackie,Peep, and Myrtle all of my Lav Orps. I moved the BCM girls in with the EE Roo and his hen. I then moved the 5 Black Jerseys, 2 BLRWs, and 1 EE girl to the grow out Pen. THat leaves one side of the brooder empty untill I get the Partridge Rocks somewhat feathered out to put them in. So now I can breathe a little bit. Cold as crap here! Hope everyone is doing great today!!

Ahh, I see. How many was "too large"?

I had 55 birds, Nick. That was just way too many to feed on a fixed income. I'd like to keep my numbers always under 40, but there may be times when it exceeds that, like after a big hatch and before the extras are sold.

Good for you, Brandon! I hate selling birds I've had for a long time, I really do. I know if I put mine up for sale, I'd have no trouble liquidating my stock, but I am too attached to most of them to even consider that.

Hey, LH, is this horse related to Joleta?? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=442781
