I am soooooooooooo mean to my birds...forcing them to read, watch TV, listen to classical music and country and jazz...forcing them to eat home baked goodies and scrambled eggs and the worst are the baked sweet potatoes....they hate to see them coming.


That is my little man, Spike, the porcelain d'uccle I got from NellaBean back in June/July. I got a trio from her and love them too pieces. He started my bantam obsession.

Nick, Suede is four years old now. I have one more set of eggs from that pen in the bator. Hopefully, one of them will be fertile.


The 7th Del wasn't right and died a minute ago. So, I have six Dels, though one of them is still hock-walking. Will give it 24 hours and then decide what to do with it. The others are nutty little fearless critters like they always are.

Pffft! Some? Source? Are you kidding me? The pump house is heated, insulated and holds pretty steady at right around 70F 24/7. That should do the trick, huh? Now you see why I've often used it as a place to isolate a girl or two who doesn't feel very good. Or injured birds, or....whatever.

It will make a most excellent broody house/hospital, which is what I plan. That is if I can just get her brooder set up done in time. I'm gonna build one of Nella's double deckers, ya know!

GeeGee really needs the peace and quiet that only the pump house will afford her. She apparently got into some kind of a scuffle with one or more of the girls this morning, and now egg #2 is missing. I also found egg #5 buried in the shavings and pretty cold. I stuffed it back up under her but I doubt it will pull through now. I know that two of the eggs weren't developing like the other three, but I just can't, for the life of me, remember which two they were.

I'll candle again tonight when I move her from the coop to the pump house.

I sure hope #'s 2 & 5 are the ones that weren't developing. If not, then her hatch is going to be a lot smaller than even I had hoped it would be. I knew I should have let her keep those 10 she had been sitting on earlier!

Busy, busy, busy day here today. It was near 70* and I was loving it! Got lots done.

OMG, horrible thing happened though ..... Have I ever told you of my fears? I am deathly afraid of ..................... water (as in pool, lake, pond, and drowning!) and of mice. Cody (Brittney's BF) was helping me. I went inside to go to the bathroom and grab a pop. What great timing! Cody came in before I went back out. He had found a mouse nest with little babies in it. Everyone here knows how I am. I can not see one or ...... Well, just his description and I was in full body trembling. It is horrible. I know it is irrational, but I just can not even bear the thought! Anyway, Cody fed them to the chickens, and they were quite happy. This was hours ago, and I am still not totally out of panic mode.

Anyway, I now have plenty of grow out pens ready for the babies, to finish out the winter. Come spring, when they are larger, I will need more space. For now, I am good.

Tomorrow I am setting quite a few eggs; Delawares, projects, and the few Barred Rock eggs I have. Most of these chicks will be shipped out upon hatch. I am done hatching Silkies and Icelandics for a while. I still have some in the bator, to go into the hatcher soon. My 4 New Hampshire girls have given me 4 eggs a day for 8 days straight now.
