Well, that's sort of good news Kathy. You have power and food and baby chicks which is good. You are going to have massive flooding when it melts which is bad.

What have you learned from this episode Ms Kathy? Always have stuff on hand! If you do such massive quantities of hatching, I would guess you should at least get a small generator to have on hand for times like this. And I would definitely get a nice stash of those hand warmer things.

I am just not used to handling stuff like this myself. That's what husbands are for, ya know! I guess we do have a generator .... up in Iowa!

Not that I would know what to do with it anyway.

Look at this cute Olive Egger I hatched. I know the egg looks brown, but it is actually DARK Olive. Sired by an Ameraucana (Lavender or Black). Can you see the little muffs?

And this black one hatched last week ....

Years ago, my big thing was tropical salt and fresh water fish. I had a 100 gallon salt tank and a 150 gallon fresh tank. One winter, we had the wind storm of all wind storms for the Pacific NW. Knocked out our power for eleven days. No! I'm NOT exaggerating! ELEVEN DAYS!

We were most fortunate that our next door neighbor had a generator big enough to power both homes, for just the necessities. For us that meant the pellet stove [I'll personally never own another one TYVM!] the fridge and the tanks.

Unfortunately, 4 days into the power outage, the neighbors POS generator crapped out. It was a constant struggle to keep it running after that.

Ever try to find a generator when half of the state is also looking for one? Needle in a haystack! Long story short, on the eleventh day, after a week of searching endlessly, chewing my fingernails down to the quick, and jumping out of my skin each time we heard the neighbors POS generator cough and sputter, we found one! At of all places, K-mart! Bought it right then and there, ran home with it, fired it up and breathed a huge sigh of relief to see the tank heaters and all flicker back to life.

A half hour later, our other neighbor knocked on the door to tell us that the power was back on.

We didn't know because we had thrown the main breaker out on the meter so as not to electrocute anyone working on the lines.

Since then, that little generator, just a 2.5 kw, has been our life line on more than one occasion. Kathy, even a small 1kw genny should be more than enough to power at least the incubators and the brooders. Come spring, watch Craig's List for them. They'll be dirt cheap at that point.

Awwww! Cuteness overload! Who's the mama? Obviously the daddy is your Amer roo. I want them both!!!!

Now Kathy, just because I say I want them, that doesn't mean I need to have them!!

I want all kinds of things. Doesn't mean I need them!

The mama is my one and only Miss Olive, my Olive Egger. Her egg is so dark it looks nearly black-green! I mated her back to a blue egger in hopes it won't go darker. I sure hope these are pullets!

You can kinda see that the hatched egg is olive colored in this picture .....

yup right before Hurricane Andrew hit miami. I had takem mine up to my dad's because it was supposed to go north near him...it made a 90 degree left and hit me instead.

those are some awfully cute chicks!!

It is rainy and stormy here. It was raining when I got home....I dreaded having to go out back where it is muddy and gross to do chicken chores. And then I went out and it took a whopping 3 minutes total. Gosh, I love having everyone out in the big coop. My mottled flock stays locked in in bad weather days like today, so all I had to do was go lock up the chicken coop, collect eggs and lock the duck crate. Seriously. 3 minutes. GLORIOUS. I filled all the feeders yesterday, so they are good til the weekend. I just take a bucket of water down with me in the mornings to refill the bowls.

I probably could have done it in 1 minute, but I took a flashlight out and counted chicks in the coop. Since I moved the new ones out Sunday night, I wanted to make sure they were all making it in.....yep, all 8 "old" ones and 18 "new" ones were in the coop tonight. Good job little chickies......

Really, I am happy for you!

You have done great with your downsizing. Now, you get to enjoy!
Because of this dang weather, I am not enjoying so much .... but, I just keep thinking it could be worse! Had I not downsized as much as I have, I would be filling up 6 more pens with feed and water!
