Well, since you asked: Not too shabby. You're probably not going to believe this, but GeeGee is still sitting on that one egg
AND taking care of little Gooby. [stop laughing! At least she has a name and didn't have to wait for half of forever to get it!
] I candled the egg last night and there is most definitely life in there. And it is most definitely developing! I figure in about another week to a week and a half to go,
if all goes well.
Gooby hatched out a week ago tonight, if you'll recall. I candled the remainder of GeeGee's eggs a night or two later and only one egg remained viable, but it looked like it was only on day 7 or so. Apparently, I have one very sneaky girl out in that coop someplace!
Nella and Kathy advised that I pull that egg before GeeGee lost interest in Gooby, but so far, it hasn't happened. It's just astonishing to me, from everything I've heard about broody's and possible staggered hatches under them, that she's still so completely content to sit there on that egg, while at the same time, teaching Gooby where to peck around in the food dish to find the best bits.
The other concern that was raised was one of size. By the time the egg hatches, if it hatches, Gooby will be considerably larger than her sibling. That could put the littler one at a disadvantage of course. But so far, Gooby's behavior is such that I honestly don't think it's going to be a problem. She's a very sweet and quiet little girl. Kind of on the shy side and not rambunctious at all! Of course, that could all change with the introduction of a younger sib.
We shall just have to wait and see I suppose.
Outside of that, not much else going on. Chief and the gang spend their days just like every other day, free ranging, laying eggs...you know...SSDD!
Hope y'all are having an equally boring day. Boredom means no drama happening in my book, and I'm definitely good with that!
