I have never seen a broody who could even fluff her little bitty face feathers. Her face looked like a porcupine.

The baby is adorable. Still no others.

This is what greeted me when i got home today. The girls were a little overeager for their daily scoop of scratch. #16 on the right and #22 on the left. #16 is one of my white leghorn/giants (same as the broody above) and gives me a BIG light tan egg with white speckles.

Wish I lived closer to you, Kathy! I'd come help. I love building stuff with Tom.

Been fighting a nasty nagging headache and a woozy feeling all day. I think that massive weather front that roared through here overnight messed me up. Been working on a quilt, too, so my eyes are crossing.

I have those very same clamps you have! I just have never used them before. I am gonna use them now! Heck, I think I am gonna do this tomorrow while DH runs to Kansas City. Won't he be surprised when he gets home!

Cynthia-hope you feel better hun!!! Its been snotty central down here.

Pssssst, they have a pack of clamps at Home Depot for $25. It comes with 4 of the clamps shown in my pictures....2 of that size I used plus 2 of the next size bigger....plus 2 of the other kind of clamps that looks almost like scissors that you just squeeze. I don't like those, so I just got it for the others.

Do you have a harbor freight near you? I got two 24" clamps there for less than $5 each recently.

Almost forgot.....here is how I have the lights and the waterer in the existing brooder unit I have.

Light hangs from an eyebolt in the corner. Another eyebolt near the front clips onto the hardware cloth that is wrapped over the front. For mine, I have the cords running out the front going through a gap in the door. The plan was to cut a small hole in the back wall to pass the cord through. I think I will do that on this one.

For safety sake, I use a large clasp and run the cord through it as well just in case the hook comes undone.

I use 1 gallon waterers......hanging from plant hangers. I use a few different ones. Even the smallest generally will hold 10 lbs, which is enough for a 1 gallon waterer. Here is one of the more sturdy ones.

Because I am a nerd, I keep extra 1 gallon bottles of water on top of the brooder unit. That way I always have a perfect 'refill' available.

eta: I have had birds crash into these lights multiple times. Worst that has happened is breaking the bulb. It has never "fallen".
