This is exactly how so much misinformation gets passed along, isn't it?

It all just sounds plain crazy to me!

WHERE oh where is Nella? Do ya think she is still bothering those broodies, or is she still working her construction job?

What a surprise, Nella was EATING. LOL. That is nearly a full time job for me. It's hard to stay round without round the clock calorie intake. Mexican food, mmmmm.......

I only bothered the broodies a little.....as of 6pm, that last egg was still not pipped or anything. Since 21 days is technically tonight/tomorrow, I will throw it away tomorrow. All the others hatched early. The chick that fell out of the nest last night or this morning was indeed dead as a doornail, so it got tossed. But 15 of 16 eggs hatching under 2 first time broodies is downright awesome. When i went out for night lockup, another chick had fallen out of the nest, so I removed the nest box and just put the hay on the floor....Miss Momma had gotten all the babies tucked back under her by the time i went inside.......the chicks are super adorable.

Final tally:

RIR/Cochin

3 black chicks (1 died)
3 chipmunky chicks
3 yellowish chicks with dark spots
1 blue chick

Silkie
2 black chicks
1 yellow chick (splash)
1 blue chick
1 chipmunk chick

For a grand total of live chicks:

4 black chicks
4 yellow chicks
4 partridge chicks
2 blue chicks

How funny is that? Too bad i didn't set two more eggs, bet that would have been blue! ha ha ha

Both moms are doing good so far. They're both still sitting, but should be getting the babies up and at em probably tomorrow. I put food down in both brooders and I think the waterers are low enough but will probably move them a bit tomorrow just in case.

No building today! The boyfriend was down visiting from Ohio, we had lunch and then he went home. Then I took a giant nap and then I had to go take care of my sisters cats and had a late dinner with my cousin who is in town for work temporarily. Busy day! No building, le sigh.

LOL no hiding necessary...I was not ranting at you whatsoever...

I see so much misinformation some days it drives me nuts....and most could be avoided by simply reading the stickies on this forum...some of it just makes me want to scream

I mean stupid stuff like - "Help help all my new babies are gone?" and you open it to read and the dingbat took 2 day old chicks and put them in her backyard which was secure because it had a solid privacy fence and she gave them a little box they could sleep in.

SLEEP IN? So I wonder what ate all her chicks?

or the "My birds do not look right..what's wrong?"

So you open to read that these are 6 month old or so birds that are skeleton thin, wobbly when they walk and one or two of them died...so you ask the normal questions....other symptoms? what are you feeding them? how is their poo? etc etc and the response...

"Oh they free range and get a little corn tossed to them each day"

well I am no vet nor do I need to be to tell the fool...ummmm they are dying because they ARE STARVING TO DEATH you twit.

and my all time favorite...voted number 1 by the committee to stop stupidity from breeding....

"My hen had a cold and died...why?"

You open to read that the hen had a "stuffy nose" and was breathing through her mouth, coughing and making raspy noises. The PERSON put vick's vapor rub on the hen's chest area and throat to "help open her up" and she went all jerky and twity a moment later and died...Why would a cold kill her like that?

well first..they do not get colds and secondly, she is not a human child and three you killed her by means of respiratory distress and suffocation from vick's vapor rub on her.

Oh yeah and all this because someone told them to do it that way. Some of it makes me want to go and take the birds away from them because they are too stupid to have them. Most hatcheries and waterfowl hatcheries such as Holderread's use red heat bulbs. Babies need rest..not a 250 watt bright light 24/7. Oh I wish I could find that thread.

Keep ranting Ms LH, you crack me up.

YOUR mama is doing good. They got some smashed boiled eggs this morning. The kids weren't thrilled and little momma was trying her hardest to show them that they were yummy. She is a very good momma. Now that her kids are a week old or so, whenever i go in there, there are always heads sticking out of her feathers looking at me. SUPER cute. I tried to take a pic earlier but my phone storage was full. She was showing them the eggs and they were all gathered around watching. VERY CUTE. Even if i make a broody bungalow, I think I will leave them in the indoors brooders for at least the first few weeks. Each brooder is big enough for these moms and babies for a good while.

Not sure when I'll have time to build a broody bungalow anyways.....maybe i can make the fence panels one night this week......

I edited to add my all time favorite in stupidity....the vick's vapor rub moron

So Nick..use the red bulb, the chicks will thank you and grow and be happy little critters...I Promise!

Nella...get me some pics woman....hehehehe I need pens woman...badly. LOL Hera is a standard no ifs ands or buts about it...she makes up 6+ of Spike and is wider than my Orp girl who was hatched in May I believe.

I should apologize to everyone...I am very very snappy. My dear sister has spent the weekend thusfar waiting for all these tests tomorrow and having no idea if she is treatable, what it is or if she is dying...so she has not slept but instead had panic attacks every few hours round the clock....well my mother is fielding those calls while the sun is up...I am fielding them all night. I think since Thursday night I have had about 6 hours sleep....so I am snappy.

I am exhausted and currently on phone duty afraid to fall asleep for fear I will not hear the phone if (more probably when) she calls. BUT that is what big sisters do...right?

Oh and btw I have GLC bantam eggs coming soon, wth, I need to have my internet disconnected to stop the madness!
th.gif

and I have 19 eggs in the new bator, 12 Barred Rocks, 6 BOs,1 EE. I think I will keep the secret of the GLCs cause my friends and family might have me locked away, lol and then if Kathy gets me hooked up for the New Years hatch oh my!

I was talking to my mom today and she was like what are you going to do with all these chickens. I said well mom its chicken math. Since the eggs are being shipped their hatchability is lowered so just because I have 40 eggs in the bator doesn't mean they will hatch. Oh did I forget to mention that the new bator will hold 41 eggs, lol I thought she was going to pass out.
