Geesh Amy I feel sorry for ya! On weekends I usually sleep in but it's 7:42 here and I'm outside jump roping with my sis!

Kathy, those Wyandottes are drop dead gorgeous, especially the roostER! Does he have a name? He needs one!

I agree about the Wyandottes. I hate that all mine died from internal laying. I am leery of getting more, but if I ever did, I want good quality breeder stock. I'm sure longevity would be better.

The little Del whose toes aren't working right is still scooting on its bum. It may be a hock issue rather than a toe issue-haven't had one of those in ages. It does seem to have pain when we try to look at the leg. I hate having to put down another baby because of a bum leg, but there's no choice if it's a hock issue and it can't ever stand up. You know, babies hatched and raised by my broodies never seem to have any issues like this. I wonder if it's just coincidental that the leg issues are always bator-hatched babies or if there's something to it. Can't see why, though, not if temps and humidity are good throughout the incubation.

The toes are not crooked, but he doesn't splay them out and place them properly. The sides of the outer toes are hitting the floor, not the bottom of the foot.

Gah! I've been at my other house for the weekend, and my neighbor was supposed to take care of the chickens. I get back this morning- both waterers are empty, both feeders are tipped over and filled with mud, the inside of the coop isn't clean and all the eggs are in the nest box. So I run over to their house to ask about it, and they say that they just painted my Pepper's toenails. Really???? So I did everything and they all ran to the water and drank for ages...

GAH! That is why I can't trust anyone with my birds, not unless I know they are just as obsessive as I am about the comfort of my flock.

Nick, you can't do anything about internal laying. It's genetic/hormone related. Hatchery stock, especially high production layers like sexlinks, are highly susceptible to it.

We euthanized the baby. It was completely healthy, but could not stand and had obvious pain in the hock. I hate this part. So, I have five rambunctious Dellies competing for my attention in the brooder, ready for their new owner.
