Well, I ended up in the ER. It is an ear infection that caused erosion of the ear canal. which led to the bleeding. Not a big thing just aggravating. Whew! It is so hot here today. I have had fans on the coop. I also opened up the second part of my coop to give them more room at night to spread out some. They are growing fast. Maybe later I can get some pic's. They have consummed all the alfalfa from the run now so I plan to get them some greens. I sure wish it had lasted longer. The run is 12x48 feet long, plus they have a 12x12 area fenced off with a roof over it. I wish I could free range but we have loads of preditors here and no where they can run and hide easily.
This fall I am going to build some beds with wire on top. Then they can peck the greens but not scratch them up so bad. Its too hot to do anything except feed and water now. Gloria Jean

I'm glad you found out and can get that ear infection cleared up quickly! Take care!

That's a great idea, building beds with wire on them. They will love having greens that keep growing. I saw a picture of one somewhere. I think it was here on BYC. Great idea.

In this heat I have been changing water at least 3 times a day, just to keep it cool. It sure gets hot quickly. Hope we all get some cooler weather soon.

Was 97 in the sahde at the coops yesterday afternoon. I lost 2 more BRs Sun and Mon....my BEST looking cockerel from the birds I hatched from Jeremy and 1 pullet. I am SOOOOO over summer!

Both Reba and Nugget have breathing problems today so they're in the hospital cage. They've been suffering terribly in this high heat and humidity. Nugget is heavily feathered being one of Jody's nice big Buffs and she hasn't handled this summer well. Reba is laying internally and already had fluid building in her body from that. I can't take much more of this. I'm ready to sell out my bantams to free up that coop and simplify again. I'm so tired!

Scott, I'm so sorry to hear that! You know I have an awesome young quad coming along who is 17 weeks old now. Hopefully, I'll have eggs in the near future if you'd like some. Just let me know. Rex is quite studly, I think.

Cyn

So sorry to here you are dealing with internal laying AGAIN. Seems to be neverending at your place....

Just went to check on eveyone here (working from home office today) and it looks like I am losing ANOTHER BR pullet. She is all hunched up in the shade. Her legs are "streaked" red which I've never seen. I put her in the brooder with a fan and cold water (w/electrolytes) and hopefully she will bounce back.

I really expected my Col Rocks to struggle the most with this heat having come from Canada....but they seem to be dealing with it pretty well. One cockerel was all sprawled out IN THE SUN and the thermometer is reading 90 in the shade

I have one CR girl acting kinda goofy. She stays on the roost a full day at a time, comes down the following day, acts as normal as can be. Next day, she stays on the roost....go figure.

To top it off, and I thought I had avoided broodies this year, my blue rock x columbian girl decided to go broody last night!!! Why in the world do they wait until its 100 degrees out....the eggs could hatch in this weather without them.....

Hope all of y'all are stayin' cool!

Cyn...I might just you up on that!!! I have 2 cockerels left but neither one impresses me much. Mine are about the same age. Girls looks like they are getting close but the boys are acting weird. Neither the BRs NOR the CRs (and the CRs are 7 months old already) are crowing!

Pepper, my Del boy is the only other rooster here and he crows his fool head off every day....they have a good teacher

Scott, I hate that for you! This is just the worst summer I can ever remember. And trying to keep my poor birds alive is making it even worse for us. If you want BR eggs from my bunch in the future, you know you just have to come get them. Don't know if you've seen pictures of Rex, Wynette, Dottie and Ida, but they are looking really fine! Rex is very slow to mature just like your boys. Not crowing, not mating the girls yet. Golly, even my 11 week old Delawegger is mating! That's weird beyond words. And that's why I have to rehome him before he's fertile!
