We are new to chickens and our 13 babies are getting quite big, quite fast. So this weekend is the weekend to get going on the coop. I have seen several people post about sealing the floor by using roofing tar instead of linoleum and I have heard of people shellac-ing the floor to seal it. What is the ultimate (don't want to do it again) floor sealing? Also how high should the roosting boards be off the floor? Since we have 13, from what I have seen on here, we should have 4 nesting boxes, correct? Those should be lower than the roosting bars correct? Thanks

what are the dimensions on the coop you're going to build? higher off the floor with the roosts is ok IF they have enough room to fly down without having a rough landing.

yes, build the roosts higher than the nests, or they'll want to roost in the nests and they poo a LOT while roosting.

Several on here talk about blackjack 57 on their floors, others (like me) just put down vinyl flooring. With a few inches of bedding on top, either way will last as long as you want it to last pretty much.

Some will just paint or varnish the floors, any of those choices are really going to work well

I am actually building a wall in a yard barn that currently exists, It already has a "doggy door" opening( which I will build a door to close at night) that leads to a run we will be working on next, and the area I will be sectioning off for the coop, in the barn, will be 12'6 Wide X 7'3"-8'6" (tapers) Tall X approx 6' deep (about 1/4 of the barn).... There is a concrete floor and it is insulated and finished on the walls, besides the one I will be building this weekend. There are windows and sliding barn doors for ventilation. I am unsure about the litter boxes or boards under the roosts yet... I like both ideas.
