I've used varnish. I know, crazy to use emulsified lac beetles to protect wood. Like they did on ships and wood furniture for centuries. Dries crazy fast, alcohol soluble not mineral spirits but basically use a disposable brush and toss it once done. A quart can is relatively inexpensive. One good coat will do, just needs a dry surface.
Anymore I have non leaky coops and more pine shaving depth so don't do anything with floors. I don't keep water and food in coops.
