I have a small flock of chickens. 3 orphington, 2 delaware, 2 ostrolap.

I am looking for a smaller rooster that is not aggressive by nature that will have egg laying genetics? we had a brown leghorn that just beat up the hens and almost killed one of them. I am now looking for a smaller (lighter in weight) rooster but still is in the large egg laying breeds. I really do not want a small breed.

Any suggestions?

There are many people with heritage Rhode Island Reds nowadays trying to preserve the old fashioned breed, and there are people in Pennsylvania with them. They are very calm and non-aggressive as opposed to the hatchery/feedstore RIR that is really a mixed breed, and known for having aggression problems since they probably have a bit of leghorn mixed in for egglaying. There are a couple of people in PA with them here on BYC (immyjay and dickhorstman ) that could probably fix you up with one. I have raised some this year, and in all the chickens I have raised they are the calmest, gentlest breed so far. This time of year many have extra roos that they would gladly give away or charge very little for.
