Seasonal run floor covering

What can you get easily and affordably?
I mean, we don't really put dollars and cents on the birds or the eggs, but obviously we don't want to line the run with dollar bills... LOL
Natural non-dyed mulch 2 cu. ft for $2.5
Straw $6 or so per bale
The run is about 180 sq. ft. so 15 bags of mulch would get about 2 inches worth... ball park.
No idea how frequently it would need to by actually removed, vs just added to.

If you have space to store a large pile of tree trimmings, that would be best.
It's usually free and can last for a couple years.
I never clean anything out, just add some a few times a year as the smaller chunks break down.

Just add more.

You never really need to remove it, unless it piles up so deep it causes problems (like making you bump your head on the roof, or letting the chickens walk out over the top of the fence.) The main reason for removing it is when people want the decomposed material for another purpose (like adding to the garden.)
