Hi All,

I have my one, lone fertile Sebby egg in this incubation with a side air cell placement. The egg was added to the incubator on 2/14. I tried keeping it in a cup when i found the side air cell mid incubation time. But it didnt move or change, So i moved it back to horizontal placement, with air cell up the last week, it kept rolling back that any ways.

I know geese can take 28-30 days-ish. I normally wouldn't want to rush in and help, but concerned about the air cell placement for internal pipping. When should I considering opening a safety hole?

I just candled and i can see slight moving. Very small, slow blips in the aircell edge at the starred position in the pictures.

Could hear the gosling cheeping in egg this afternoon, so I'm assuming it managed to internally pip! Still waiting and watching.

So chick was cheeping up until early evening. On recent check, there was no cheeping, so my husband opened an small hole in the shell. He suspects the chick is dead. He can see beak but doesn't see any movement. Very disappointing, since it was just cheeping earlier.

Can someone clarify how long they have air in the air cell between internal pip and external pip? Everything I was reading about the geese is that they take longer due to the thick shell. To expect 2-3 days. Is that in reference to the whole pip time- internal, external and then hatch. Or is that only from external pip to complete hatch?

If I can figure out the time line, I will add an air hole if we haven't seen an external pip with in 12-24 hrs of hearing internal pip.

I'm sorry to hear this, most everyone uses Petes guide to hatching goslings. And he does talk about making a small hole for air due to length of time it takes them to hatch.

You won´t hurt it at all by chipping a little piece of shell away to have a look. If gozzie was making a noise, he was definitely in the air-sac. But sometimes they can have trouble if there´s too much humidity, etc. They´ll often take 2 days, and once they´ve pipped through the membrane they´ll still be a long while before they start to chip away at the shell, then that takes a time, too! I´d have been chipping the shell into the air sac. The important thing is not to try to take baby out before everything´s absorbed...but a little hole in the shell to the air-sac is no problem. Sometimes they´re just resting. I do hope all´s ok.

I got back intown last night and it was dead. Stinks knowing we caused it to suffocate to death. I'm bummed you guys didn't answer sooner, then we could have had a chance. Now on to the next 6 eggs.

Chances are very good your gosling was deformed and that is why it could not externally pip. You may have been able to successfully hatch it out of the shell, but then you would have opened a big can of worms trying to help the deformed gosling. Sometimes it is better to not intervene. Glad you have more eggs to hatch.
