Sebastopol Geese Thread !!!!!!!!!! SHOW YOUR PICS !!!!!!!!!!

A lot of the geese in the UK are smooth breasted and it is an accepted variety over across the pond. I would think that a smooth breasted bird would have better feather quality though.

During breeding season the birds do get quite torn up and can look pretty nasty.

I have a few pictures of mine below when they were overcrowded during the winter. Mind you that would be 20+ geese, not just four.

Just found a great picture of our Hansel from when we took him to Northeastern Poultry Congress show... it was on hubby's phone

He was only 18 months old and still went 3rd in the old gander class... what do you guys think of him?

Thanks for posting the pics pips&peeps! I was expecting them to look like your geese on the photo but they looked extremely worse.. I'm glad I didn't buy them, I now think there maybe was more wrong with them than just bad weather conditions.

This week I'm gonna try incubating some geese eggs I can get close to home and when I get that right I will order some Sebastopol eggs from the UK!

Sad to say... but Suzette has not laid another egg... Soo I decided to put her one egg in the bator last night that she brought with her in the shipping box.

Hi,

I'm new at BYC.

I'm from Holland and Sebastopols are really rare here. I'm thinking about ordering some hatching eggs from the UK. There is only one thing I'm worrying about.

This weekend I went to have a look at 2 couples of Sebs that were for sale in Belgium. After a long drive I arrived at the sellers house. At first I didn't recognise the geese as Sebastopols. They had maybe 2 curly feathers hanging from their back and the rest of their feathers looked almost like wet wool on a sheep (this is the best way I think of explaining). The seller told me that in winter it's hard for them to take care of their feathers. I left without buying the geese because I never seen pictures were they looked this bad.

Now I'm wondering if these geese were poorly cared for or if this normal (they were outside in a muddy pen). Maybe someone could post some pictures of what I should expect them to be this time of year?

(Our geese are being locked up every night in a big stable. At daytime they are in a big meadow without mud and they are provided with a little kids pool or at least a few buckets of clean water, is it possible to keep them at least presentable this way?)
I think it would have been best if you had taken some pictures of them for us to look at. From your description it sounds like they were in really rough shape. Many Sebbies look bad during breeding season, so it's hard to say without seeing them firsthand.

I know, pictures would have been a lot easier for you to give a good advice, but I don't think the seller would have appreciate me taking pictures.

The pictures pip&peeps posted gave me a good impression and the geese I went to look at were really much worse.. I couldnt judge at first because here in the Netherlands Sebs are'nt seen often. I knew the feathers get ragged in breeding season but this was so extreme I wanted to make sure this was an exception.

I still love the sight and nice temperament of Sebs so I just gonna try incubating some eggs.

I completely understand! Good luck in your search!

ok, wrapped up the color plates showing a few of the colors. Will work on additional plates as time allows. Hope this helps those who asked for pictures of the colors

To my knowledge no one with ALL of the colors has put together samples showing how they look at various ages and compaired to each other from their own stock where they can accurately show the colors from hatch.
