Sebastopol Geese Thread !!!!!!!!!! SHOW YOUR PICS !!!!!!!!!!

I have been having luck w/ my newbie (1 week w/ me) they are 6mths. Well Bella is the more friendliest! She taked food from my hand but also loves to nibble on it too! And sometimes it hurts! What should I do. I don't want to scare her but she gets my fingers by her jaw and it hurts!!!
How can I stop her?
Feeding geese by hand is not really good because then they try and bite. You do not want to promote this. Just get them by you and put the food on the ground so they know you are a good thing to come by and get goodies. But feeding by hand ganders get aggressive in breeding season if you have hand fed them they will bite you. Ganders can be big stinker on biting..... They love to bite in breeding season they hate everyone and everything! Brats!!

I only offer big stuff like bread or fruit, and I let them pull it from my hand when it is offered so they do not connect it with biting, and in 3 years of breeding my gander had never done more than puff up a bit- no biting, hissing or chasing, I can also retrieve eggs from under the hen who doesn't even hiss. However. .. if you are a stranger LOOK OUT!

OK Daze if you liked that try this one. I was doing some yard work this was about 4 years ago. I had went over to the pond my husband had made larger for the geese and when we had ducks to swim in a bottom part and a top part. Anyway I had went over to weed a bit of the weeds from around the top pond. I was bent over and Sammie my very first Sebastopol gander which I hand feed and that brat bit me right in the butt. I said ouch and Sammie went ha ha ha ha!
That gander knew what he was doing and thought it was quiet funny!

I have been bitten by several of my ganders. So some ganders do bite and mean it too! Yes, you have to show that you are bigger than them but if the chance is there in breeding season they will get you from behind when not paying attention.

One time we raised a single midge white turkey with some chicks. She was the only turkey egg to hatch in that clutch. Her name was Turkey Butt. She was very friendly and ended up staying in the garage a while longer than necessary because we were still building the grow out coop they were going into. When we would go into the garage to feed, water and clean, we would open the lid of the pen and she would fly out on our shoulders and roam around the garage a little. We thought it was so cute! We have a pet turkey that will sit on your shoulder. Well, as they all do, she grew up. Well I was outside one day and bent down to pick something up and low and behold a full grown turkey jumped up on my back! My first reaction was to stand up and dump her off, but that was a bad decision because she scrambled with her claws to hand on. Needless to say, it wasn't cute anymore!

You are welcome daze. Sammie thought it was supper funny too. I lost my Sammie this year and my gosh do I miss that gander. He jumped right into my heart when he was a gosling and put the love of geese in my heart. Losing him as very hard to see happen. He was such a lover.
When he was younger he would see me with a camera and come pose for me. I would take his picture and he walked away so proudly.... He knew what I was doing.
I lost all the pictures I took o Sammie when my computer fried.. Darn it I did not back them up....

Here is another for you daze. Again Sammie in breeding season bonded so well to me I was out doing waters and was coming back through the yard and Sammie was right with me now remember I was new to geese and had no idea of what he was doing. We would always talk together the ha ha bah bah. He talked so pretty. He then would flex his neck and bob it up and down and take two steps towards me. We would talk more and he would take two steps more towards me. The next thing I know is he grabs me by the back of the pant legs and tries to breed my leg. Yes he did! He after that tried it all the time but I finally got smart and knew when to exit...

Yes, it is cute when their babies but not so when older and weigh a whole lot more! The shoulder becomes a lot smaller when they become a lot larger...

Funny about Sammie's antics. I love those kinds of memories! Sorry you lost him! Sounds like he loved you!!

hmm... all these stories of breeding season. I wonder what my geese will do next spring.

Goosey is my baby and I can't imagine her sweet personality changing.

Gooser is a sweet heart, but he has his moments. He can't stand being held and doesn't like it when I approach him. If he's going to snuggle, than it has to be on his terms.
