Hello, I have always loved chickens, all birds really, but I recently found the sebright chicken and was instantly hooked! Does anyone know how quiet they are, I live in a neighborhood. I would also like to know if they make good pets as well because, well... who wouldn't want a cute, pretty little bantam following you around. I would like to know more about theyre behavior in general as well.

I have had Sebrights in the past. A golden and a silver. They sure can fly, but if they are used to your coop, should not try to escape. Mine flew away when I first brought them home. They were grown hens at that time.
My Silver Sebright was my longest living chicken. 13 years. My Golden Sebright lived 8 or 9 years.
They are friendly hens, and good at escaping predators, just like my OEG-hens.
They are also not noisy at all.
Even though they are on the small size, does not place them at the bottom of the pecking order with other larger chickens present.
Ask anything else specific you may have concerns with.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome

Thank you for replying and it does help to know that they are quiet, if i get some that aren't used to me however, should i clip their wings? i am new to the whole chicken thing.
Also, would you know if it were ok to move chickens cross country?

I did clip wings on some chickens, but only when I first got them home. (adult hens) after the feathers grew back my chickens were homeset to coop and run and backyard. I never needed to clip wings a second time. I like their ability to fly away from danger,,, if needed.
You can transport you chickens reasonable distances. Just remember, that they do need to be fed, and water given at reasonable intervals. You would also need them to be inside your vehicle, (in cage) and not in the trailer you may be pulling. That would be considered to be cruel by me:hit
If you know you will be moving soon,,, I would wait and purchase some at new location. :idunno

Yes i do plan on getting the sebrights after i move but i already have four chickens, 2 NH Red Hens, 1 Leghorn Hen, and 1 week old Barred Rock runt that is little bigger than a day old chick. and needed some insight on how to move them.
Good thing i have a big car, i have to take my main mice and rat projects and chickens in there. along with family

It can be done,,,, of course with a little inconvenience, but possible.
Just 2 questions wondering in my mind.
Will you already have housing for your pets at new location??
Approximate distance?? time to travel??

I am moving from Idaho, to South Carolina and yes there is room, there is already a chicken coop on the property and there is a dog run for the dogs, plenty of space for the cats to roam in the house (i don't let them outside) and i can use part of the dog run for my rats and mice. snakes and other reptiles will have their own room except for the monitor and boa which will be in my room.
I also have a tarantula.

Looks like a 3 day trip. I don't think you need to feed the reptiles, but they may need water?
On another thread, a person moved from Washington State to Texas with all his belongings, and pets. I'm sure it was challenging, but he did it.

We have done it once before, but not with mice and rats, last time it was from Florida to Arizona. But we didn't have rodents, snakes, cats, dogs, spiders, or chickens. we only had the geckos.

Hi

First of all good luck with your move and sure all will go well.
I have a male and female pair of silver sebrights, they are only 1year old and weve had them 3mths. The male as with all chickens was protective of his girl and did give us a peck as a warning which we respected. They were also quite resistant to been handled. We handle them now everyday day with ease and get very excited when they see us. They handle very well.
Our sebrights are in a run not out and about as am sure they could fly if they desired.
The girl isnt noisy at all but the BOY he has quite a squeaky crow that travels, for such a little man he can sure belt it out so be warned if your considering a male for your sebright girls!
