That really hurt. Now the SD card isn't working. Great.

SCG's Quick Guide to Ducklings: 1. They make a GIANT, wet mess. If brooding indoors, get incontinence bed pads at your local pharmacy and put those down in the brooder. Change at least every 24 hours. 2. Ducklings are incredibly cute and look great in your bathtub. Throw some peas or shredded lettuce in. Don't worry about them "getting wet" - they'll dry off. Do this while you're cleaning the brooder and letting it dry. And then when you're done with them swimming put them back in the brooder, and then bleach your tub. Twice. 3. Ducklings will steal your soul. They also love to be fed dried mealworms through the brooder window or thrown into their water dish. 3. Ducklings don't really need heat and heat lamps like chicks do, but if you're going to let them get wet in the tub it's not a bad idea to have one over their brooder. I used an 80 watt regular bulb. It helps them dry off. 4. Don't give them too high of protein feed. I started with 22% then moved to 18% and then to 16% pretty quickly. They grew like weeds. They also had some joint problems, so supplement their water with some liquid B or liquid multivitamins with b vitamins in it. 5. They can go outdoors pretty quickly. They are a lot more cold tolerant than you'd think. 6. Ducklings LOVE to be carted around in trains. 7. Ducklings teach you lessons in life. Every now and again the universe randomly flips you the bird.
Can't wait....I have 4 Cayuga eggs that have about 2 weeks left on them. Will be my first endeavor in raising ducklings. #3 is my favorite rule.... or is it a warning?

DURR, here's a pic of my new Johnny Jumper chicks. All of them hatched in the last week. You can't see all of them, but there are about 15 of them from 2 hens. Ignore the random red wing and the feathers at the top of the pic, they belong to my 2 Easter RIRs. The chick at the bottom with the white feathers could turn out to be a white, but sometimes the colorful ones start to feather like that before changing colors. Pure white feathers at first always feathers out white.

ETA: One of the chicks with stripes is bald. I have two like this and I just don't get what's going on. The fluff is just missing on them. It's not ripped out or anything. I pulled them out from under the hen like that.

Forgot to say, tomorrow we're going to the only store I know of here that has fertile eggs. I plan to pick up a dozen while we're there. I'm curious as to how it's going to turn out. I was hoping to find some at walmart tonight, but they didn't have any marked fertile.

They had some really pretty dark brown ones too.

Always welcome in this one. There are some pointers on the first post, as well as some contests!! We're casual- just chat along and try to help each other to restrain ourselves!!

Yes, we are all about helping each other, and showing restraint!

Last head count tonight was 65 chicks 4 turkeys and 3 ducks in the brooders. All born this week! There are still more hatching and piping!

Oh crux...lets see if I can remember all the multis I pushed. Grrrrr

Ceoka...your humidaire incubator is not helping you be restrained. You should come to POOPS. A great place to sell chicks and meet fellow byc'ers. And for those who are curious POOPS is People Of Oklahoma Poultry Swap for local BYC'ers.

SCG you do great dialogues. With pics. Love the duck one but the emu ones are my fav.

I keep candeling but don't see any veins in the turkey eggs. Only 6 days but normally I see veins by now in chicken eggs. Should I be worried?

nothing at all wrong with eating a little fat in your food.. and homegrown turkey is better for ya then junk food any day!

I saw a Julia Childs spoof video that said that: You need fat in your diet to absorb your vitamins"
Great point, ROn!!!

Good for the complexion too.

THe 70's was an era of NO fat and apparently, I was a little too young to know personally, that many women had health problems on NO fat diets. Gee no kidding.

SOmeday I want to try goose pate!!
Goose Pate NO NO NO let me tell ya how to cook a Goose or a Duck with out all the greese.
Get your oven Up to temp put animal in pot Ready for the next step ?
Take a Paper bad Yes Paper and Put the bag around the bird ..... POOF Moist less greasy and Yummy Now do not do this with a live bird OK thats been done before when i gave otu the info and not too funny.
