**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

OK, no box and lamp yet. I usually use one or 2 plastic tubs for hatching and they disappeared, so I used on on the kind with the openings in the side and then a short box to separate the LF from the bantams and from some eggs that have smaller chicks. In this case Sumatras. I got rid of all the water and started over. I was shining my mag inside and realized I really have to many LF eggs in the basket to make hatching easy, so I pulled out the box and reached for the basket and something peeped. I looked down and one of the Sumatras is pipped. I still have crowded eggs, because I pushed it back in and the box too. No more drowned chicks! No more sufficated chicks! Vents will be only open like they always were before and I'm only adding a small amount of water at lockdown. Hopefully I didn't shrink wrap any of them. AND This is day 21 for the later hatchers and day 22 for the others, so I was off a day. I lost my mind almost 3 years ago, but I'm determined to get it back. Starting with this hatch! Like I said, I couldn't see anything in some of the eggs, but I'm making myself beleieve this is going to be the best hatch in a long time!
My mind left years ago never to be seen or heard from again. Glad things are finally looking up!!!

OK, I am finally caught up.

I have had a lot of flaky CL people too. In fact on Sunday a guy was supposed to come get some pullets. I didn't hear from him, so I called. He was in Kansas City at NASCAR. Obviously his phone worked, so why the heck didn't he call? I called the next person and he was there in about an hour. Sheesh!

My ex hated my chickens. Well, maybe he hated that I wouldn't give up the chickens and my other animals, and my home to drag myself and our 3 children on the road with him while he was working. Anyway, now he is my ex, and he still has to pay for the chickens. I kept my married name, because of the kids.

My user ID. Many years ago, around 17, I was creating my first email account. Back then it was cool to choose a name that wasn't your own, basically an alter ego. So sitting there I was trying to come up with a name. I had a cat named Taz. Tazcat was taken, so I added the year I was born.

OK, I am sure there was more I wanted to say, but I have forgotten.

Anyone around I can ask some questions of? I'm not messing with those hydrometers, but I think I still have a humidity issue and just need to know which way to go.

My little Sumatra pipped a BIG hole. I was surprised to see how big. I went into check just now and when I shined the light on him I could see the inner membrane was completely shrinking around him. I couldn't even see his beak. I took him out and got it pushed back and he's still stuck from his chest down and I wrapped a wet paper towel around the shel to see if it helps get him out. I did open the incubator earlier and found him barely pipped and peeping, so IDK. Not sure if he could have got shrink wrapped from that or is this going to be like several lately and they pip and DIS?.

So what I need are some suggestions as to whether I add water or maybe even take some out. These eggs have had way to much humidity the past couple of days and those vents were closed until recently. Not sure what to do in this case. Usually I would up it, but I'm leaning toward trying to bring it down a bit.

So my hatching gurus, if you're awake, stear me in the right direction. Know what really sucks is I can guide someone else and I don't use my brain when it's me.

I would leave the humidity alone for right now (I can't see your setup so no idea if you are using a fan and how it's blowing onto the eggs). his issue was the BIG pip.. anytime you have one that makes a large pip and then rests for too long stands a chance of shrinkwrapping especially if the fan is blowing directly onto the pip... the only thing I would do (other than assist the little guy) would be to spritz the eggs / inside walls of bator with a spray bottle set to a fine mist whenever I opened the bator.

Just not sure if I already have it to high. Would low humidity cause him to make that big pip? I just checked him and he didn't make it. He was very weak when I decided to go in for him and just flopped when I got his head and wing out. No bleeding or anything. It was actually an easy assist other than the membrane was completely covering his beak. Took a minute to find where I could feel a tear and open it with a Q-Ti.p. I was really hoping he'd get some strength and just finish hatching out, but he just laid there. Really sucks, cause I was hoping to keep a few Sumatras and I sold a lot of their eggs since I had no bator space. I hope this doesn't happen more, because I have had this issue a couple of times. I've helped a lot before, but sometimes you just can't see back enough to notice anyone in distress. They are in the bottom hatching area of the Sportsman. This is an old old machine, so no way to turn off the fan. Maybe I can use something to divert it? I could always slip a piece of cardboard in there to block it off, but not sure if that would also hamper the humidity. What do you think?

sometimes a chick just uses bad judgement.. no idea why..maybe it's just Darwin's way of culling the "not so bright ones" chances are that the other chicks will pip normally.. so I would leave things as they are for now
I see nothing else happening and that little guy was really working at getting out and being heard for quit a while. I keep peeking in but a watched pot never boils and a watched egg never pips.

Thanks for hanging with me on this. I'm wondering if the vents were just closed so long that that's having something to do with it. Sure was a pretty blue chick. So you don't think I should try to maybe block the fan?

Went and tapped on the door and I heard at least one more peeping. Looks like maybe another Sumatra. I can barely see a very tiny pip and saw the tip if the beak for a quick second. The way it's sitting I won't be able to see if this one does the same thing, but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed. If I do have the same problem I'll find a way to block the fan.
