Second Annual Cinco De Mayo Turkey Hatch a long Digest 5-3-2013

HEChicken had a Duck hatch a week late! It was not expected and now new plans are being made for Turkey eggs that are under the Broody Duck.

Tazcat70 updated us on the hatcher failing—Chicks have hatched!

Chookschick has wiggling shadows in the eggs but no pips! A Hen turkey also joined the Turkey Circus that was passing by. A Pea Hen also tried but was caught and returned home. There are around 200 chicks in a brooder with one momma hen. Hopefully the hen will be careful!

Heyheypaula now has temps too low. Later we were told that the pipping had started! There will be chicks hatched! Even later still, pictures were posted of the first chick! And then later again we saw a picture of the second chick that hatched!

Manningjw has one pipped a bit early and in the wrong end!

Uphilljill has tutors hatching! One hatched in the wrong position with yolk still not absorbed. Was gone this morning.

Wolftracks posted a link to a thread about her daughter graduating and moving on to a UC(University of California)!

Mrshaggie810 has a broody and needs to swap infertile eggs for fertile eggs but is worried about being bitten. HEChicken said they can’t really hurt you so move the infertile eggs and move the fertile eggs close to her. The Broody will move them under her.

I had one turkey hatch this morning and one more working on it now.... Hopefully more tomorrow!

I set 7 more Royal Palm eggs today that were a replacement for the 7 that turned out clear for this hatch.... I'll be setting 6 call duck eggs with them on Monday...

Nothing out of the turkey eggs. They're just laying there doing nothing, but that's ok. I had eggs due yesterday and only have a Silkie chick out. No pips to be seen on any of the others. I swear, this house is jinxing me. I added a little more water and just waiting.

Manningjw has one pipped a bit early and in the wrong end!

Update! Several pipped this morning, 2 of those hatched already and the first pip on the wrong end (now 24 hours later) still hadn't progressed much at all. I removed shell in a ring around the egg without disturbing the membrane and it looks like she is in a poor hatching position so I am glad I did it. It is chirping and moving so I will let her come out when she pleases unless she continues to not progress over the next day. I just don't want to risk helping too much if the blood vessels are not dried yet.

Tonight I came home to 2 hatched chicks which were causing way too much trouble in the incubator, they are now in the brooder fighting over the food :). They are a full day early but appear to be quite lively. I have about 5-6 which have also pipped including the early wrong end pip and another wrong end pip. Can this be due to larger than normal air cells?

That is great news!

You all are hatching up a storm!

I hope I get at least one Naked Neck out of the remaining 5 eggs under the broody. She's setting on them real tight, but with 15 chicks I can imagine she's going to want to get out and go poop soon. They aren't due until Monday.... keeping my fingers crossed.

Time to share another video of the eggs hatching and the 2 very early chicks

!!

Anyone experienced with pea comb vs single comb, does this chick appear to have a pea comb? It did to me which would make it a definite keeper being black AND having a pea comb - especially if it turned out to be a Rooster.

Sure looks like it to me and well, also that big and that young, I've always gotten a roo.

I totally understand--my boys will not collect eggs from the hissing broodies. THey use a stick to lift her up and look for eggs, IF eggs they come get me. lol

Try putting on a leather glove, or any glove, perhaps a gardening glove. If you pick her up and move her off the next for a few minutes you can do your thing.
