**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

Silly little duck laid two more eggs. Guess where they went when I didn't find any cracks? So that makes 4 duck eggs total. I swear I won't add any more.

It is nice to be joining in again in the Cinco de Mayo hatch again as last year was fun. When I set my eggs I didn't even realize it was so close to the hatch but am so glad that it is and I get to join. On Friday I set 41 dozen eggs that I collect on a long road trip that was 200 miles. Most are chicken eggs that will hatch a week before the hatch date of the 5th, but I did get the turkey eggs and guinea eggs that will hatch just a few days before. I really hope the turkey eggs hatch. Last year the eggs I got ended up not being fertile, but these are from a different person so i am hoping all goes well. I may also go pick up some more goose eggs today, but it depends on my schedule. I pretty much have all the turkeys pre-sold already, I have someone that wants 4-8 of them, just hope  they hatch well. And today is my birthday.

Wow and I thought my incubator held a lot at 24 dozen!!  What do you two do with all the chicks?
I will keep some and sell the rest.

OK OK OK Now your gonna love this

I just ordered 36 Wishard Bronze turkey eggs and they will be here Over night ,
IM HYPED Can someone tell me what the heck they will look like ?

I am assuming that they are regular bronze but the wishard is a breeder ? The guy was happy to help and since they are local VERY and know how we just got 4h back he was happy to help.
I did not ask for anything and he said OK he will send me extra but a warning his hatch rate is 90%

I am excited about this finally got my eggs for the kids and will get to do the project YEAH.

So I have 3 little turkey poults

I can't believe it it is the first 100% hatch rate yet(or 75% if you want to count the one egg that never developed) I can't wait for the next 4 to hatch next week! I haven't kept up very well with this thread so will try to do that.

Is it odd for turkeys to hatch 2 days early? I am pretty sure I did not miscount and I am pretty sure I had written down the correct dates. I was so worried when they started pipping almost 3 days early.

They hatched 24 hrs later, is that why they say put them in lockdown for 3-4 days early?

The poults are all different. I was told could be- Royal Palm, Blue Slate or Narganset cross. One is almost a solid yellow but in some places has very light silver tint-blue slate splash (not sure of the term in turkeys)or Royal Palm? . The other two look like a Naraganset poults when I looked up the pics but one has dark chocolate lines/spots and the other one has much lighter almost a grey brown lines/spots. Does this mean one is a hen and the other a tom? I guess I could just always ask the person I got them from.

Gosh they are just so darn cute I don't remember the meat turkeys ever being this darn cute and BTW what is up with no node on it's nose?? Never seen another breed of turkey poults except for the BBWs so all this is new to me. They also seem so fragile it took 2 days for them to find their legs. They are so quiet too. I have another pen of chicks who are a week older who are so LOUD and active, they are like mini adults putting shavings all in their food and water EVERYWHERE. I have never had such overactive chicks before! But this hatch is soooo QUIET! Just moseing around sleeping here and there not many peeps at all and no running at all. The quiet ones are now 3 days old I had two rocks hatch 5 days ago but they are in the NOISY pen! I have two extremes it's kind of funny to see it all. I am going to have to combine them next week I wonder what's going to happen. I wanted to wait untill all the new chicks and poults were able to run before putting them in with the "big boys". But they are so quiet and subdued. I am getting some day old chicks in a few days plus there is more hatching I might just leave them in the "hatchling" pen until next week maybe the other chicks will "teach" them how to run! I knew about haveing a teacher chick for eating and drinking but for running too? I wonder if maybe it has to do with the lighting even my super rambuntious "teacher" chick has really quieted and calmed down. The light in that brooder is redder and seems warmer even though it is at the same height as the other one.

I will take some pics tomorrow and try to load but no promises having some issues with my phone company so may not have internet tomorrow, but I will try to load pics! I will stop rambling he he

I just set chicken eggs tonight to hatch along with last weeks set turkey eggs. One of my OE eggs got cracked a few days ago( I dropped another egg on it while I was admireing my Marans eggs
hide.gif
) I kept it with the other eggs not planning to set it but as a just incase I decide to set it( we all knew I was gonna set it lol but hey I tried) So tonight I decided last min I was gonna fix the egg and set it anyway with no space in the incubator mind you. I melted candle wax to cover the hairline cracks and the egg is now laying beside the auto turner on the wire floor with an X on one side O on the other.

This is my first time mending a cracked egg, also my first time filling, now over filling the bator, and first time with a hand turned egg.

I think its time I designed with my straight jacket... Who here sews and can you mail it to me ASAP

Uggh... been there, done that. Killed the chick inside, unfortunately. I felt bad for weeks.

Isn't it a bit cold in Michigan for hairless dogs? What do you do in winter? Or are they like turkens and are very hardy and don't notice the cold?

Anybody here hatch quail eggs? The last few times I have set some I seem to have a bunch end up cracking and not developing. Does anyone that hatch these also have this problem? I'm sure they would do better with the proper trays (right now I am using egg flats with the bottom cut out). I wrapped cotton around them this time in hopes that it would improve the cracking problem, but it doesn't seem much better. I have a guy that ordered 100 quail and I only have 104 left over from 12 dozen eggs. I doubt I will end up with the 100 he wants, but hopefully I can come close.
Sounds like calcium deficiency. Try adding finely crushed oyster shell to their feed.

I'm tripping over puppies. We have three 5 week old Chinese Crested puppies right now. They are bored with their whelping box now so I've set up a system of X-pens and baby gates in the kitchen. They hang out in the kitchen for most of the day and while I know they love the extra space to run around and explore they aren't too happy about the fact that their mama is an expert gate jumper/climber and needs breaks from them. I can relate, I need breaks from my DD too. lol.

I really enjoy having puppies around since they are so cute, it'll be bitter sweet when they go to their new homes.
I've had 2 three week old kittens in my bed at different points tonight. My cat keeps bringing me her babies.

Mine crack very easy also. I am getting ready to start collecting to set next week

Try adding crushed oyster shell to their feed. You may have to make in smaller pieces than what it normally is. Cracking usually means weak shells.

You are more than welcome to egg bomb me!

Does anyone dry hatch turkey eggs?
Yes I do and I think Chooks does as well. I dry hatch both chickens and turkeys. It seems to work really well.

I usually have at least one start hatching early.

I can't help you much on the RP or Narragansset poults but the blue slate I hatched last year was all grey with some yellow near the face. I think boys and girls hatch out the same colors so you won't be able to tell the sex for months.

Gosh they are just so darn cute I don't remember the meat turkeys ever being this darn cute and BTW what is up with no node on it's nose??
That is called the snood. When the toms display it extends down quite a bit. Both boys and girls have them but only the boys will extend.
