Today has not been a good day for me with chickens. My project roo decided to go nuts and pecked my dad's arms bloody We had to clip his nails and treat him for leg mites. So off I went and put him on craig's list. I'm really hoping to get rid of him soon. Then a bit ago I had to check on my broody hens and Fox decided she was going to try to rip my skin off.

Hey guys....I am always reading a few posts at a time thru out the day, from different sources, phone, kindle, laptop,, work comp. etc. So I kind of mentally store stuff I need to mention later on...so here it all is... a bunch of random thoughts that accumulated thru the day.

Speaking of Hubbys.....You guys were talking about Maiden Names... My husband calls me the femi-nazi...
My story is very similar to SCG's.

I am from a close italian family, with an italian name. My first husband who I married young was hispanic, so when I changed my name it just didn't fit "Me", who I am. After we divorced, I was so excited to get my name back I thought...never...never will I change it again. So professionally and to my family I am a Camarata, to kids school and the kids friends, I frequently answer to Mrs. Hernandez and to my hubbys family and our mutual friends etc I am Mrs Jacox. So I answer to many names, but in my heart I am Camarata.


As for the results of my hatch and the chicks with health problems....
The one with the unabsorbed yolk just died...that was the one I was least worried about so surprising to me.
This is the first time and I pray the last time that i ever have to cull a chick. The one with the bleeding belly was bleeding out and I believe even losing some of his inside. I could not watch it because of the suffering i believe he was having and so we had to end it. But again, hope I never have to do that again.
The one that had zipped partially then stopped, I had helped remove the top of the shell as I posted earlier but he would not come out on his own. Finally I took him out of it because he was definately a sticky chick. He is still doing ok...I hope... I did have to make some boots for him as his toes are all funky for being so big in the egg.


Ok my last question. Help me understand humidity. I always assumed that sticky chick came from low humidity, but my humidity this time was high. In the eighties probably. I thought it was because they were all hatching at the same time. Next time I will open it or something to bring it down. But why would high humidity cause sticky chick...shouldn't they be wetter? Just trying to understand. Or wait...maybe the moisture causes the membrane to break down? I don't know just trying to understand.

Oh another random thought...Sally said to some one ohhhhh to be young again, then I made a comment earlier about how much BYC almost feels like extended family... I guess that makes Sally and I feel grand-parently to Raz?

maybe I shouldn't link Sally with Grandparently...she could be 30...just the two comments linked to me.

Sticky chicks are caused by not absorbing the yolk correctly. Shrink wrap can be caused by too low of humidity in the hatcher during hatch.

If the chick pips and zips and then gets stuck, the membrane will dry out and stick to the chick. That will happen no matter what the humidity does.

Too low of temps, too low or too high humidity, unhealthy parent flock, shipping stress and too high of temps all cause the yolk to not absorb.

Humidity is very flexible for hatching chicks. They hatch well over a 25 or so percent range for the first 18 days. Since the chicks were sticky, look at other causes, like those mentioned above. The most likely cause is wonky temperatures so I would invest in a Brinsea Spot check.

As for my screen name, I was in a melancholy funk about the same time we got internet access for the first time (in 1997.) I was going to set up my first e-mail account and was trying to think of something that described me, generally. At that time, I was lamenting some decisions that I felt had negatively impacted my life, and grieving a lost love. You know, the "If-I-had-it-all-to-do-over-again" regrets that sometimes come in your thirties. I was thinking that I wished I had done some things differently. Well, 'Wishuponastar' was too long, and just 'Wisher' was already taken. I was given the option of adding random numbers, so I settled on Wisher1000 because I thought it would be easy to remember and to type. Since then, I have gotten over my melancholy and most of my regrets, but have come to embrace the screen name and to use it all over the net.

BTW, for those of you that pray, send one up for me. I'm having some tests run tomorrow and hope that the results will be good.

I have chicks running out of my ears, not that I'm complaining. I have 3 six week olds, 20 two week olds, and 15 day olds under a broody (with four more eggs under there, too!) Then, there are the 15 turkey eggs, 2 duck eggs, 1 banty egg, and the 21 or so tutor eggs that are developing in the bator on day 18, and day 12.

I think I will be selling some chicks, for the first time.

I'll be praying for good results.

Ummmm, my name is Deb and I have a bunch of birds. The only story part................I'm old enough that I remember when you couldn't have blank spaces or characters. So I realize it should be

Too low of temps, too low or too high humidity, unhealthy parent flock, shipping stress and too high of temps all cause the yolk to not absorb.

I did have on day 18 when I changed the eggs over I had about an 8 hour temp situation. it swung up to 104, thought I had it stabilized and didn't check for about 4 hours, and it had gone down to 86. I do have the brinsea spot check which is great I am actually getting another so I can keep them in both incubators. This is my first time with the unaborbed yolk or the belly situation...I wonder if that all depends on what days the temp spikes are. Since I have been using the octagon this year my temp has been spot on, but I moved them to the LG to hatch because of a staggered hatch. Very thought inspiring. Thanks for the tips.

Yes, the temp spike would be your answer! I have a picture of a bunch of fully formed chicks that died at day 19 from a temp spike.

You are lucky that they hatched!
