Hahaha I totally get it! I’m almost 30 and my dad still gets to be right and celebrate itLol, dad's know some things!
He's mostly correct.. This bird pictured is a pullet, aka young female chicken. They earn their hen and rooster badges at one year old. Before that they're technically pullets or cockerels.
Please note that most (non hen feathered) breeds will sporting some gender related saddle feathers by about 12 weeks old.. Very different than the long confusing (sickle) one you're talking about.. it tricks or confuses lots of folks.. This photo from Google makes it pretty clear.

I hope you are enjoying BYC!
Please forgive me.. as a parent of 2 young adults.. I feel the need to celebrate when a parent is found to be NOT as wrong as the kids always think they know more..
Go Dad!![]()
Both cockerels, & Crosses. So what do you think of mine? Boys or girls?
Pullets.12 weeks this Wednesday, and one of the babies has very long ends to her tail feathers. She is also really strong. But then again they both look a lot alike and I know all develop differently. So which do you think, hen or roo? My dad swears it’s a hen but I still can’t shake this weird feeling he’s wrong![]()
