I have noticed that my egg production has slowly been dropping off from 20-24 eggs per day and today we only got 12 eggs and one hen was missing. So I figured I had better investigate.
The rafter area of my shed converted to coop is being used to store a few bales of straw until I need to use them. As I have used them throughout the winter I have noticed the chickens have found that they could get to the rafters and a few time onto the straw. Well with the missing hen and eggs I figured I had better send my 9 year old to investigate.
Well look what we found.
A total of 17 eggs that were on top of and between the bales of straw but that was not all.
Our missing EE. She must have at least a dozen or more eggs under her.
This is my first time with a broody hen, let alone a broody hen that is up that high. I put some water and feed up there with her. Is there anything else that I should be aware of to make sure that she and the chicks (if she goes that far) have a good successful hatch?
