I have noticed that my egg production has slowly been dropping off from 20-24 eggs per day and today we only got 12 eggs and one hen was missing. So I figured I had better investigate.

The rafter area of my shed converted to coop is being used to store a few bales of straw until I need to use them. As I have used them throughout the winter I have noticed the chickens have found that they could get to the rafters and a few time onto the straw. Well with the missing hen and eggs I figured I had better send my 9 year old to investigate.

Well look what we found.

A total of 17 eggs that were on top of and between the bales of straw but that was not all.

Our missing EE. She must have at least a dozen or more eggs under her.

This is my first time with a broody hen, let alone a broody hen that is up that high. I put some water and feed up there with her. Is there anything else that I should be aware of to make sure that she and the chicks (if she goes that far) have a good successful hatch?

Iffin it were me, I would move her and her eggs. This can be done at night. I'd be too worried about chicks falling from that height.

Wow, she's really determined. I'd bet there's more than a dozen under her, judging from all the eggs that are around her that she can't cover. I hope for her sake, that those are fertile eggs.

I haven't had a broody yet, but I'd probably move her. ETA: How long has she been "missing"?
