Securing Hardware Cloth

I actually used the screws, not so much for coons but really large dogs wander here. And I've SEEN what the teeth and pull of a big dog can do. I've never seen a coon or possum or even small dog move a 9/16 staple either.


I just erred on the side of caution. I can just see the e-fence going off and some of these huge wandering monsters getting in one night. Too many locals think nothing of leaving their dogs loose all the time and feeding them too little.

There is a picture of poultry staples in my original post. I've also heard them called poultry nails and fence staples.

I have had to remove some of the larger fence staples, and they are not easy to get out if the wood they are hammered into is solid. I had to use a hammer, screwdriver, and a pair of pliers to finally get them free.

Coons are smart, but not that smart. I've never seen one with a tool belt..

we had used 1/2" staples on our outside pen, and had a coon pull off the wire and eat two bantams...so i went back over the edges w/ thick nails hammered in halfway and then smashed over into the wood...when i build the new pen i'm using the screws w/ washers...already bought them

I am confused a little I think..

by 9/16 staples are those the kind that are like flat wire bent into a U shape and shot out of a hand squeezed gun??

If they are, how long will it be before they become completely rusted through??

If you are usng pressure treated wood posts, I would give you a full year, maybe two..

just a thought..

The world will go around a lot faster for you if you use screws and fender washers to attach ALL hardware cloth.

Poultry staples, so thats what they're called. If you choose to use them I've found that needle nose vise grips are a savior for holding the thing as you nail it. A cats claw nail remover will make really quick work of removal.

After several weekends of coop building I'm a firm believer in using screws where ever possible though.

I used staples all the way..........never had a problem. It's a whole lot easier too. After stapleing I hammered them a bit more to be sure.
