Security window Film?

When using caulk (Dow995) on a window for the 2 step installation... what side is best for giving it a gasket look? Top and Bottom? or the sides? We usually tape the sides first then come back the next day and tap the top and bottom... Is this correct or does someone have a better method?

I have no idea what a 2 step installation is, but when applying DOW you need to measure out the amount of "bite" on the frame and window and then tape that distance away. You will have tape on the frame and glass. If youve done it right, and used blue tape, it should look like a mexican restuarant.

After tooling the DOW the tape is pulled immediately to give a nice straight border, that looks nothing like a "gasket" to me. No offense, but it sounds like you are doing it wrong.

Hey There,

We are a professional 3M certified window film company out of Toronto Canada. First off, you are absolutely correct in using Dow 995 to anchor your security film to the frame.

When we do caulking, we use a small wooden stick that is shaved down flat to the size of the bead that you desire. We usually do 1/4", but then again we are using applying it for Blast Mitigation purposes so you might not need to go that big.

If you are able to run a steady bead then start from the corner and come out to the middle. Stop. Go to the opposite corner and run the bead till it meets up with where you left off.

Now you can take your stick (store it in small cup with lots of dish soap and a little bit of water) and tool down the bead you just applied starting from the corner and going straight across.

Repeat this step for each side.

You should be able to do the whole window at one time, and not have to tape or come back the next day to finish it.
