Hi Everyone. I’m new to the forum. I’m interested in keeping Coturnix quail primarily for egg laying and I have a few questions.

I’m in the UK and there are a few different colours available to buy as hatching eggs over the internet. I can’t find any breeders near to me to purchase adult birds from. I’ve been looking at the Jumbo/Giant Goldens and Jumbo Browns. Appearance wise I do prefer a speckled bird and for a beginner, I have read they are easier to sex.

Firstly does anyone breed Goldens and if so how big of a problem is the “lethal gene” and does it only affect some strains? If I were to buy hatching eggs that were labelled Jumbo Golden would I see a lower hatch rate that the other colours. (How many extra eggs should I buy or would you advise avoiding this colour strain)

Is there any difference in temperament between the regular sized birds and the Jumbo/Giant? Are the slightly larger birds more placid/less flighty and do they lay larger eggs? Do the jumbos lay as often as the regular size quail or has their breeding compromised egg laying for bird size?

The person that is selling the Goldens also sells the Texan A&Ms. I was thinking of maybe buying both and keeping them together. If these two colours mix do they throw a mixed colour bird or either one or the other.

Pen wise I was thinking a wire bottom , Total dimensions of 6’ long x 3’ deep x 18”high. With a 1’ x 3’ area at the end of the pen enclosed for a nest box. Wire on one long side and one end, with a solid back and roof. How many birds would live comfortably in a pen of this size? Would it be better to make a few smaller size pens as appose to one large? Would 1/2" by 1/2" weld mesh keep out foxes as we do get them in the garden?

Inevitably with hatching eggs myself, I’ll most likely be left with surplus males. Can they be kept in a bachelor pen until I decide what to do with them/ try to sell them. If they don’t sell the only thing that worries me is the ability to dispatch birds myself. I’m not sure if I could do it. I suppose I could take them to the local butcher/abattoir and ask them to process them for me, but I’m not sure if they would accept such a low number of animals from a hobby breeder.

Sorry so many questions.

Thankyou to anyone that can help.

I am not well versed in Coturnix Quail. But wanted to welcome you to the forums! Hopefully some one else will chime in and give you some information.

Hello Ali,
I have raised few golds\ Italians. I'v seen it said, the " lethal gene" could take out up to 25% of your hatch. I have never had anywhere near those loss rates. As I understand it. The only losses you could blame the lethal gene for are the birds the fully developed and "die in shell"... as in when they should pip, they just quit. I have never seen a jumbo gold. I have heard tales of them but never saw one in person or on a scale. I would need to have one or the other happen to be convinced I was buying "JUMBO GOLDEN"....The ones I have raised ran around 250 grams at 8 weeks.

Now the jumbo brown\wild color can be big birds....This one is around 18 weeks old in the pic. I notice no difference between the colors or sizes as far aggressive or calm. Either could be flighty or chicken calm, just how you raise them.

As far as pen size goes. The pen you size would hold a LOT of coturnix. The bigger the pen the more you can crowd the 1sq, ft rule. There is really no need for a nest box for coturnix. Dust pans are used heavily thou.... I kept mine in quads, 1 roo + 3 hens in 30"X24" pens with good luck. I also used 48"x 30" pens as grow out pens for 20+ birds up to the 8 week butcher mark, many times with no problem. You can stack a lot of young roos in the same pen. They would be hard on any hens in with them thou pass 5 weeks of age or so....

As far as the extra roos.... you may as well get past the " I cant dispatch them" Its part of raising coturnix. You can do it and while its never fun. It does get easier after the first time. Besides, once the young roos start crow'n, It seems like they just taste better!!! Good luck , Bill

Edit to add: As to the color mixing. some one else will have to help you there. I never run a mixed pen. Hate mutts that dont breed true!

Many thanks Bill for your great info. It really helps to get some advice from an experienced keeper.
I really like the look of the Giant Goldens that are being sold at the moment. The seller does have very good feedback. I’ve contacted them to ask the origin of their birds, their hatch rate and also for a few more pictures of a bird on the scales.
Would they need a nest box for the winter as temps can fall to 5*F in the winter here?

Ali
