My parents had 4 acres and a little building and run dedicated for our flock of a couple dozen chickens. I remember having to feed, water and gather eggs. I believe in only beneficial pets. They want a dog really badly, but I want them to learn what it is to take care of something which will give them appreciation for where their food comes from and educate them. Not to say that one day I wouldn't be open to welcoming a dog just as long as I could be sure I wouldn't be stuck with caring for its physical and emotional needs all by myself.

I want to build a chicken tractor like the one from Rooster Hill Farm in NC i think its called the Hen Pen. My husband wants me to find plans and I'm having a heck of a time finding actual plans for it Or one like it. So many are over built and look just too, too heavy. The finished product needs to be something wimpy little me can pick up and push or pull across the yard every few days. Anyone have any good ideas or sources?

Our property isn't as large as my parents' but we'd still like to do something which will encourage respect for animals and for our food sources.

What you are looking for then, is called a tractor - a portable coop/run configuration. They have many tractors in the coop section. You may find a type that will fill your needs.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Most of the folks on here have dogs or cats but, their children still love the chickens.

The reason some people choose play house, or cutesy coops, is for a smoother introduction to the neighborhood. People tend to think chickens and coops are smelly and filthy and will drag the property values down. Chicken people may disguise them or make them look like their houses etc.

If you have land and farm neighbors that doesn't have to be a major consideration.

Thanks for your input. Using the mobile version of BYC I'm having trouble finding the plans section. I'll have to look it up on my PC. We live in a rural community surrounded by mega farms. Any damage to the property values has already been done with the stench from these monstrosities. Half a dozen to a dozen hens isn't going to be any more noisy than our neighbor's excitable and neglected dogs. I can't walk out the door without one of them losing their minds. We don't really need to hide our chickies. . . When and if we can get them.
