Thanks, everyone, for your advice/encouragement. What a valuable resource this site is! I think I'll give it a go and see what happens. It's VERY comforting to know that there are hundreds of ppl to call on if I have a question. THANK YOU ALL, SO MUCH!!

This is my setup that I converted from an old shed. It works great and maybe your handy friend can use it as a guide.

I gave myself that thump a few days ago, I had pretty much the same thoughts you had.
but after I had gotten myself into that.
So far so good: Aside from little poopy butts the day after I brought them home, my chicks have not had any troubles even if my success rate is only 5 out of 12 (loner story, 6 were my fault, and it was probably a good thing, I had ended up with ISA browns, which are to my understanding a laying hybrid. That might have ended up not too well anyhow. now I have a nice mix of what I hope to be long lived little buddies. no roo)
this morning they got watermelon rind., tonight they might get a handful of mealworms s bedtime snack. tomorrow they might get some more grass as I have to cut another path through my 'meadow'
 
btw depending on where you live, you can get lucky and find something good on craigs list. Day before yesterday I saw a decent setup for perhaps 6 chickens for a reasonable price. My run came from tractor supply (I cannot recommend having it shipped to your house unless you have either a forklift and/or a loading dock) and while I laughed (initially) at the thought of spending an extra hundred dollars on having them erect it, the cage is a beast, and I would have not been able to do it without my son.

I have an unopened Tractor Supply coop in my trunk right now. LOL Bought it the last day of their $100 off sale, because I didn't want the sale to get away, IF that was the best coop I could find. May keep it or may return it... I have 27 more days to decide. If I keep it, I'll have to open the box in the trunk and unpack it piece by piece, LOL. But I'm looking at coop plans, and I'm might ask my neighbor if he will help me build one, because I can't do it by myself. I've checked FB marketplace and craiglist, but nothing reasonable, and besides, I have no truck to pick it up or strong person to move it for me. I confess, I'm really not good at asking ppl to help me, so I try to do everything myself.

which coop did you buy? Chances are a BYC member can give you a first hand rating on the item! Mine was the 8x8 run, without coop attached. I tackle that problem when it gets cold, so far we are having temps in the mid to high 80s. they need airflow more than anything.
And of course a dry spot, but I do have a tarp over half the roof!
