Hi all,
I need to segregate my rooster for the rest of winter. My flock stays in a heated barn during the winter. Less space than their outdoor run but adequate. I’ve noticed some tattered feathers on my hens back from my rooster and I’ve decided to make him his own “ bachelor pad”for awhile until feathers regrow. Do you think he will do better in a spot where he can see his girls though a window or is out of sight out of mind better? He is really a sweet boy to both people and his ladies. Let me know what you think!

A rooster can feel contentment even though cut off from physical contact with the hens as long as he is located where he can still see and talk to them. You can even allow him to roost with the hens at night while securing him separately during the day.

Agree. I often do this using a large dog kennel in the middle of my chicken yard when things get too rowdy with up and coming cockerels.

I agree to house him where they can see each other. All you are doing is trying to stop him from mating them for a while, not trying to adjust the pecking order.

Have yours finished molting? Those feathers will not grow back until they fall out. If any part of the feather shaft is left behind they will not grow back. Since you are in winter you are where most chickens have finished molting until next fall. They won't grow back because they are tattered.
