Segregating the boys from the flock

Good morning all, I am in need of some advice. I purchased a pandemic flock back in the begging of all this madness and I ended up with 9 roos. Now that they are older and are an issue with overmating the hens, I have pulled 7 roos from the flock, all Amerucana (TSC EE), I have them in a makeshift pen with one side attached to the old run. My question is this, if your going to house a Flock of boys, is it an issue if the runs are attached to each other? I don’t know if I will be able to build a stand alone run and give them adaquate space without loosing my yard to chickens at this point. Thanks for the advice.

I do not have any issues with fighting at this point, outside the normal chicken disagreements it seems to me. Everyone has enough space to run and hide where needed. I just have an issue finding someone to take these birds and my wife refuses to eat the meat from them (even though she knew this was a probability).

One year I purchased 25 straight run chicks, and hatched 25 more. I ended up with 50/50 males and females. As the boys got older, I put them in a separate pen (aka “grow out” pen). They were definitely sexually mature, the pullets free ranged around their pen every day and there was no fighting. This was my experience, I can’t speak for anyone else. The only way to know if it will work is to give it a try. Be prepared to take action if needed. (Homegrown chicken is delicious!)

Can you advertise them on your local rummage sale site? Put up ads at the feed store?

Thanks for your exp, I am seeing them go crazy trying to get through the chain link to the girls but they would have to go up and over to get them and they have yet to do that (only day 2)

I also was against this but if I can’t get someone to take them then I have to in order to keep my girls sage

I also put them up on the local FB group, the local thread on here and on Craigslist.. unfortunately they are all still here crowing away 🤣. They are fun to watch at this time still so I am getting something I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yes, mine spent a lot of time against the fence, watching the girls and wanting out, but they didn’t fight. I should also add that this was only temporary housing until they got moved to their permanent “home”. (My freezer. That’s why I got straight run in the first place.)

If they aren’t fighting there isn’t any reason why you should change something. To stop them from constantly trying to get at the pullets, try putting something between them and the pullets’ pen so they can’t see each other.
