Selecting Breeds

Here is My dilemma.

I have five breeds chosen out, but only want one meat, one egg, and one fancy breed.

These are the breeds:

White rock

Easter Egger

Sussex

Golden Laced Wyandotte

Barred Rock


Has anyone had any of these breeds, and what do you think of them?

Here's where your help comes in...

Put down what you think would be the best meat, the best egg, and the best fancy chicken.

Ok, from experience, and research, I'd choose the following:

Meat - White Plymouth Rock: They're a nice big bird, with roos being around 9 lbs and hens at around 7.5 lbs. They have nice dispositions, and if you fall in love with a hen and decide to keep one, they're very good egg layers.

Fancy - Easter Egger: Not only are they pretty, coming in many different colors, those green/blue eggs are just so much fun to get!

Eggs - Barred Rock: My barred rock lays a really nice, big brown egg, and she's every consistent. I get an egg from her almost daily.


I think having a white chicken, the barred look, and then a random color (like the EEs can be) makes a beautiful flock!

well i haven't had any but Ive read about them...
barred rocks tend to be slightly aggressive

eggs: Sussex! can lay up to 260 eggs per year!
meat: white rock cockerels make good fryers.
Fancy: Wyandottes are pretty and lay lots of eggs and Easter Eggers lay fancy eggs but none of those are really fancy breeds, may i recommend light Brahma?Silkie?Cochins?

Sussex, Plymouth Rocks and Wyandotte are basically identical to egg output. In either breed the White Rock or Light Sussex are considered the best output traditionally. Most show quality strains considered 70% egg output. Easter Eggers lay as well but slow or even stop producing in winter.

So my thoughts are...

Meat~ #1 White Rock, #2 any other Plymouth Rock, #3 wyandotte and light Sussex, #4 you can eat any chicken you cull.

Eggs~ Plymouth Rocks (excepting partidge) or Sussex or Wyandotte.

Fancy~ Golden Laced Wyandotte. Any quality pure breed is fancy. Show quality of every breed even a plain white Rock of exceptional quality is a beauty to behold. EE's can be nice to look at too but are mutts.
