Hello all,
I am writing as a first time possible " receiver of mail order fertilized eggs " person.
Is that even a thing?
I have some layers here, and need to have more, but the availability has dried up to buy them in my area. I would like to be able to raise some from chicks, as well as obtain a rooster for future breeding. I have looked into buying a rooster in our area, but I can not get anyone who can or will sell a rooster from a "proven" line of layers.
My layers are good ones, no idea what type, but two of them are all black, and the others a mixture of red and black.
I am not concerned with having an exact breed, but only wanting hens that will produce well ( eggs)
OK, so sorry for the long lead up.
Here is my plan, and perhaps someone has some advice:
I would like to order a dozen or so fertilized eggs of a great laying breed. I will keep the hens for eggs, and select the best rooster to keep, and either sell, or give away the rest of the males.
I am in a tropical environment if that matters too much.
I will incubate them myself.
I am not concerned with a special egg color, but more interested in the most hardy breeds who will produce the best.
As well, if the rooster will be of a breed who is the most bold and protective towards predators, all the better.
I should be ready to receive the eggs around true first week of September to a Florida Keys address , if that makes a difference.
Thanks very much for any help, offers, or advice.
Mark
