If you were to breed Self Blue d Uccle Bantam and silkie to start the self blue in color, whats the best color of silkie to breed to the D'Uccle.

I know they have to both carrier the gene to get self blue. I was just wondering whats the best color silkie to start with.
Thanks

I would count out the white silkies, because you don't know what is "hiding" under the white color. I'm assuming that your goal is to produce self blue silkies? If so, breeding a d'uccle to a silkie would take a lot of work to get the silkie type correct. You may want to just start with self blue (lavender) silkies from Ideal and work on improving their type.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't d'uccles have red skin, single combs, and vulture hocks? The color would be the least of my worries there. It might take a few generations to get the silkie feathering and the skin color correct, but all the rest would take forever to get back. There are enough breeders with lavendar silkies in the US. Why not just make the investment for a good breeding pair?

Best choice is to purchase lavender birds from a breeder. Most breeders have PQ birds that they will sell for much less than breeder or show quality. They'll probably be better quality than hatchery birds, too.

I have to agree with Sonoran... the so called lavendar hatchery silkies I have seen so far are pretty sad looking. I wouldn't even waste any money on feeding those. You might have to get on a waiting list though with a breeder. They don't mass produce like a hatchery.
