I have 4 RIR/white rock crosses about 23 weeks old, been laying for almost 3 months. Real question is when I let them out for supervised free ranging one hen, Peacock. seems to self-hypnotize - she will just stand and stare unless I snap her out of it while everyone else is hunting for bugs. She does not pick a particular spot, it could be anywhere in the yard, and I can't find any reason for this behavior. It's not every day but happens about 3 times a week. Just started about 2 weeks ago.
I tried finding info on other threads with no luck (doesn't mean they aren't there - I just couldn't find any). She seems healthy otherwise. Not really concerned, just wonder if this is "normal" behavior. She's missing out on the bug feast! None of the hens appear broody - they lay and leave their eggs. Good for me at least, my intent was to have layers, though want to eventually raise chicks (so may have to add another cold hardy breed).
