Self Sufficiency blogs

Mine are a mix between craigslist and byc members. I'm hitting up the chicken swaps this spring to get some hens and hatching out chicks as we speak. They're mystery chicks as I got them at the health food store. The lady who delivers them knows nothing about the flock because their her husband's birds. I hedged a bet that with the quantity she delivers that they had a rooster in their flock. Cracked one open and it was fertile. Today was hatch day and we got nothing. Just went to candle and the chick was wiggling all over and peeping up a storm. Tomorrow hopefully!

Fun! We will be setting eggs when I return home on Thursday (I'm out of town right now).
Our chickens are a mix. We have 3 from Cackle Hatchery that a local lady orders a ton of each spring and we got from her. Then we have one that was an egg from her mixed flock that a friend hatched. Then we have 2 from a feed store (don't know what hatchery they got them from) and 2 from Meyer Hatchery mail order.
The eggs we're setting are from a BYC member and are a mix of breeds. It will be a surprise hatch because I don't know what she put in the box. :)
My daughter and I will be travelling again next week though so my hubby is going to have to take care of the eggs. I hope he is as attentive as I would be!
Our incubator has been acting up. I tested it last week and it held 99.5 for 3 days with a max/min of .5deg. Then I turned it on again on Sunday and it is going to 101! Dang it! I lowered it but I'm not home to check on it and get it dialed in before the eggs come. :( I'm going to let the eggs sit for at least a day though since they are shipped so hopefully I can get it dialed in before I set them. I'll be happy with a 20% hatch rate but will be really disappointed with a 0%!

Just a shameless self promotion here, but tomorrow I've got an exciting blog post going live. I had someone (respected in the chicken community) criticize me in my blog comments and then send me a nasty email. I won't get into details, but tomorrow I am indirectly responding. The post is about all those "hot topics" in chicken keeping. I hope you swing by.

I definitely want to see! Can you post a link to the post here tomorrow so I can remember? ;)
I'm out of town working and my memory will be shot by the time I get back to my computer.

My personal blog about my adventures in hobby farming, canning, soap making, cooking, winemaking, crafts, gardening, and of course, chickens!

I don't know that it's a 'good' self sufficiency blog, but it might be worth a read
