I have to thin out my flock and sell some of my good layers. How much would you charge for a 2 1/2 year old laying hen. I don't know how much to sell them for.
thanks,
J

I would say 7 to 10 dollars because egg production has most likely slowed down.

If they are good broodies that could be a good selling point even for an older hen because they will sit for years even if they no longer lay eggs everyday.

Depends upon the market in your area. Check the local Craig's List and papers to see what others are asking. Then ask a little more!

Here in south Ga . a grown hen will bring 12 to 15 even at an auction , I generally ask the 15 here at home and depenging on pen pressure will usually take 10 if offered , roosters on the other hand seldom bring 8 at auction and 3 to 5 here at the pen , all this is heavy type chickens , silkies , polish , cochen , they go case by case .

I would charge what the going rate is for your area... Here it is 15 dollars... I get that or more at auction. Check CL

Apparently if they are Brahma, you can ASK $100 for three of them (two hen and a roo)....but I don't suggest it. ( http://lansing.craigslist.org/grd/1864627899.html )

Guy around here sold off a lot of layers and pullets at $5 a pop, he sold over 50 in one day at that price. (I got 5 from him for $20, he gave me an "extra").

I see average of about $5-10 for laying hens here, depending on breed. EE's are more popular and I see the CL listings go fast for those at $10.
