Since most people don't like to buy eggs that have frozen, I was wondering how some people keep their eggs from freezing? I will be checking for eggs very often, but if a hen lays an egg in the evening, it would not be collected until morning. I was thinking of a heating pad, but the chickens would probably try to sleep on it.

Thanks!

I always check one last time in the evening when I close the coop up to make sure there are no eggs in the nests. Hens are not going to get down off the roosts in the dark to lay eggs (at least, I've never seen them do that) and hens have the ability to hold an egg until morning.

If you check throughout the day and one last check at night, I would think the eggs will be fine.

We check our flock morning, day and evening ... some days we are just big pests. This will be our first winter too so it shall be interesting. I can't be bothered shoveling snow away from the coop this winter so I moved it into the garage. We let them free range and they go back to the coop and lay in the nest so far too.

I check for eggs at 5am, when I open the coop, again around 9am, and at sunset when I lockup the coop.
In cold weather I also check at 1pm and around 4:30pm.
Look at the eggs as soon as you collect. You can see cracks on eggs that are still frozen.
I candle my eggs after washing and drying. I missed a cracked egg once, 20170314_222320.jpg but caught it when I candled. 20170314_220635.jpg . GC
