Hi All,
I'm new to chicken ownership (just over 1.5 years). We have some extra roosters on our hands that we are trying to sell. We had a hen raise a clutch and we also ordered some from a hatchery. The hatchery had a bad hatch of the breed we had requested and they sent filler chicks to keep them happy in transit. Unfortunately the filler chicks were roosters (unusual breeds too). I'm selling them on craigslist but I'm a little concerned and had some questions about it. Someone wants to buy 4 roosters that are almost 20weeks for $10 each. Two of them are extremely small breeds; one is a Lakenvelder and one is an Egyptian Fayoumi. The other two are not especially large: one is an Orpington but is obviously not full-grown and the other is an Ameraucana (so again, not large).

My question is: would it really be worth it to buy a tiny chicken for $10 and eat it? Would it be worth it to buy them for cockfighting? Obviously I don't want them to be used for cock-fighting. I'm open-minded to them being eaten.... we were considering that if we couldn't sell them... but I can't make that make sense for someone to buy them for $10 and eat them when most are very small due to breed and age. Thoughts? Should I be selling them for more money if I don't want them to be used for food or cock-fighting?

Cockerels are usually raised with the pullets until they start maturing then they're fattened up for harvesting. Its hard to find every cockerel a good home and they're also harder to sell. I don't look forward to harvesting any of my cockerels but its better than letting them get eaten by predators (which is what usually happens to them when we give them away or sell them!) Good luck!

Roosters for cockfighting sell for a lot more than you can imagine. It may be illegal but the trade goes on. You can outlaw the fighting but not the breeding. I've heard through the grapevine that 11 month old roosters bred to fight sell for over $200 each... There must be some serious evil taking place somewhere.

You don't have to worry about yours being used for cockfighting. Anybody that says that doesn't know what they're talking lol. Now getting them to eat I really don't think you have control of any after you sell them.

Unfortunately, once the birds are sold you have no control over what happens to them. You can state that they're for pets, not meat, but that's about all you can do. I wouldn't think anyone would want a Lekenvelder or Fayoumi for meat, but you never know. It can help to have recent pictures in the post because that might deter folks who are looking for meat birds.
